Biography

Charles Addison McCleery was the son of Thomas W. and Clara McIntire McCleery. He was born in New Salem, Pike Co., Illinois on 19 July 1884. His family called him by the nickname Mac. In 1902, when Mac was 17, his mother died of a flu type illness.

McCleery Family

Sometime in 1906 Mac’s father decided to move to Oklahoma. His sister Pearl was considering getting married, and his father felt that he needed Pearl to remain at home and take care of his two younger brothers, Kyle and Harry. On 25 May 1906 Mac married M.A. St. Clair in Pekin, Illinois. They both were age 23.

The 1910 census shows his father, sister and two brother living in Morris, Oklahoma, but Mac is living in Oklahoma City, and he appears to be married to a Nellie and living in a boarding house. Mac and his two brothers registered for the WWI draft, but Mac is shown in the WWI draft registration as living in New Mexico. Charles A. “Mac” McCleery married Nellie (née Field) Guiney, who was born in 1879 and age 36, on 23 Nov 1915 in El Paso, Texas; however, he is in Oklahoma in 1910, New Mexico in 1914, Texas in 1915 and New Mexico in 1918. Nellie had a son named Seaman Field Guiney. Other than his stepson, Seaman, Mac likely did not have any other known children.

As an adult, he does not seem to be called Mac by anyone except his father and siblings, and he even goes by the name Charles, Addison, A. Charles, or C. A.

Charles McCleery manager of Harvey System newsstand

The Deming Headlight newspaper on 8 May 1914 shows Charles managing the Harvey Systems Newsstand in Deming, New Mexico. The 1923 Tuscon, Arizona phone directory shows that Charles is in business with his brother Harry, and they own McCleery Brothers Cigars and Billiards.

Charles moved to Klamath Falls, Oregon, and in 1926 he was having a contractor build an apartment building. On 2 Feb 1927, The Evening Harold announced that the Rex Arms Apartment Complex was finished. Mac McCleery lived in Klamath Falls until he died in 1942. The 1940 census shows Nellie living in Texas with her son Seaman and her daughter-in-law, Ruth. Nellie and Charles do not show a divorce, but Charles had a common law marriage a lady with the first name Margie, and his death certificate shows that she is age 37.

In his obituary, it says that he passed away at his home In Klamath Falls, and it names his wife as Margie. After his death, his sister Pearl and her husband C.A. Lovelace moved to Klamath Falls where they lived in his apartment building. In 1946, Pearl and C.A. Lovelace had their daughter-in-law, Clarice Lovelace, and her baby, Alexis, living in the Rex Arms. The four of them lived there until it was sold sometime late in 1946 or 1947.
