James was born in 1770. He is the 2nd child and 2nd son of William and Abigail Dickinson McClung. He married Mary Alderson. They had nine children.

We know little about James other than he was a farmer and lived in what is now Mount Lookout, Nicholas, West Virginia. Where he passed away July 24, 1824.

He is buried with his wife at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church Cemetery, Mount Lookout, Nicholas County, West Virginia, USA
