He was educated in the common schools and then went on to attend Cumberland University. Graduating from the literary department in 1873.[1]

Henry, upon graduation taught school for a few years.[1]
He than took up farming. Henry had a 269 acre farm that was well built with several building, arable land and acess to water. According to the Goodspeed History of Tn he was an excellent farmer.[1]
He and his wife were members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.[1]
United States Civil War
Henry, in 1864 joined the 11th Tennesse Calvary, Confederate Army and was in Company C. He served until the end of the war. [1]
