Mrs E. C. Rich
Died, at her home, eight miles northwest of Flatonia, Texas, on Thursday, February 22nd, 1917, Mrs. Katie Rich, wife of Mr. E. C. Rich. She had lingered some ten days with pneumonia when the summons came.
She was born March 11, 1847, in Alabama, but moved while quite young to the state of Mississippi, where, on July 20, 1870, she was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Mr. E. C. Rich. They moved to Texas in the next year, and settled near Flatonia, which they have made their home ever since.
She united with the Baptist Church in 1867 and has given her life faithfully and unreservedly to her Master.
She was the mother of ten children, but only two survived her. They are Mrs. Fannie Hannegan and Mrs. J. A. Gray, who was at her bedside when she passed away. We say "passed away," but we in reality mean that she had just begun to live. Death to us is but taking the body from our sight and the soul goes to God who gave it. Mrs. Rich had been a child of the King for fifty long years and we have never known her to take one step out of her pathway to heaven.
She was a good, kind mother, often sacrificing for the happiness of her children, and for this she was rewarded by having them give their lives to the Master early in life, she was equally kind and true to her husband, never forgetting the vow "to keep him in sickness and health" and always be willing and ready to do anything for his comfort and happiness.
In the last days of her illness she was given every advantage of medical treatment, every possible comfort and care, but to no avail.
Rev. J. H. Hardy of Waelder conducted the funeral services, which were beautiful and touching. A host of friends followed her to her last resting place in the Colony cemetery, where her burial took place at 3:30 o'clock p.m. Thursday, February 22nd, 1917.
She is gone, but not forgotten. Her son, J. A. Gray.
