Biography

I was raised on a small farm in the Allegheny Mountains of Virginia. There was a small mining town of Austinville a couple of miles away where I went to elementary school and church and where my father worked for most of my early years. It was a wonderful and busy childhood with very loving parents, family, friends and neighbors. After graduating high school I attended National Business College in Roanoke, VA and worked part-time during that era.

Shortly after college I joined the Order of the Eastern Star, #97 Evensham Chapter in Wytheville, VA. Received my 50 year pin a few years ago. My great grandfather Richard McGee, my father, Garnett W. McGee & my husband James E. Britt, Sr. were all members of the Masonic Lodge. My mother Reba I. McGee & sister, Garnita M. Nichols were also in the Order of the Eastern Star.

After college I went to work full-time for a couple of years until I married my high school sweetheart in 1963 and moved to Smyrna/Marietta, Georgia. A year later there was a beautiful little daughter in our little family. The marriage only lasted about 4 years and I filed for and was granted a divorce in 1967.

During the 4 years I started working at Lockheed Aircraft as a typist and got several upgrades rather quickly to a Statistical Typist then Visual-Aide Production (drawing wiring schmatics) and then to an Illustrator (drawing wiring harnesses in the body of the aircraft). Meanwhile I attended their technical school and studied Mechanical Drawing and Drafting. In May of 1969 there was a hugh layoff at Lockheed so I moved to Orlando, Florida seeking work and a new life for my daughter and myself. Shortly afterward I went to work for Martin-Marietta in Orlando and married James E. Britt, Sr. We lived in Florida for 4 years and moved to Brunswick, Georgia to be near his aging parents.

Jim and I had 2 sons Jesse and Robby. Jim had a son by a previous marriage so when we had been married 4 years, we had 4 children including my 9 yr. old daughter and his 11 yr. old son (who was totally deaf) & lived with us full time after his mother's loodeath in an automobile accident in 1973.

In 1976 we purchased a home in Darien, GA (Jim's hometown) and I'm still there. I lost Jim in 2002 to a massive heart attact in his sleep. Our children are all grown and I have 3 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren, and 6 great-grandsons, 2 great- grandaughters and 6 step-great-grand children.

I was a stay-at-home mom for many years and went back to work when my youngest son was about 13. But during that time I was "Mom's Taxi Service" between church & school activities, sports, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and Cub Scout Day Camp Activity Director and Adult Training Classes for Scout Leaders and Sunday School Superintendent. Upon returning to work for the next 10 years as secretary, executive secretary and office manager kept me busy along with the childrens weddings and grand-babies and christenings.

In 1995 Jim and I closed up our house in GA and went to Virginia to care for my mother whose health was failing. While there we started an ostrich farm on my parents land consisting of 9 acres which was very enjoyable but a lot of work. When my mother passed away 8 years later and my husband had heart by-pass surgery in 2001 I sold all of the equipment and birds (6 adults & over 100 baby ostrich on the ground) and moved back to our home in Darien, GA.

Since then I have been retired and spending time with the family and doing what I can for and with them. At 74, I am still in really good health. Been working on genealogy off and on for the past 25 years and hope someday to get ALL my family, cousins and relatives in it.

I have found out that one of my great-great..............grandfathers was Abraham Lincoln's - 4-greats....grandfather. Plus a few other well known people such as James Scott Brady that was shot during a presidential assassination attempt, while he was U.S. Presidential Assistant and White House Press Secretary under President Ronald Reagan. Tom Hanks and possibly Kevin Bacon and George Clooney are also in that list of well knowns. So guess I will continue to work on this endever and see what or who else turns up.
