Biography

Janet MacIntosh (born Jannet MacKintosh) was born February 23, 1789 in Brechrimore, in the parish of Moy and Dalrossie, in Invernesshire, Scotland[1] the daughter of Alexander MacKintosh (~1764 - ) and Jannet Davidson (~1764 - ). A record of her parent's marriage has not been identified, their birth years are estimated based on the year of birth of Janet, their eldest child.

Her siblings were:

  1. Angus MacKintosh
    • Born/Baptised: 14 August 1791 in Moy and Dalrossie, Inverness-shire[2]
  2. Margaret MacKintosh
    • Born/Baptised: 23 March 1794 in Moy and Dalrossie, Inverness-shire[3]

During the 17th and 18th century there were eleven landowners in the parish, most with very small holdings. The Mackintosh of Mackintosh; Mackintosh of Holm; Mackintosh of Killachy; Macbean of Tormatin; Mackintosh of Aberarder; Earl of Moray; Mackintosh of Dalmagivie; Mackintosh of Balnespuk; Macqueen of Corrybrough; the Earl of Cawdor; and Mackintosh of Raigmore.

Inverness is Scotland’s largest historic county and includes a section of the central Highlands, Glen Mor, and a portion of the Highlands to the north. In the 17th and 18th centuries the county’s clans took different sides in the religious and political controversies surrounding the English Civil Wars and the Jacobite risings, and internecine strife shook Inverness-shire. The British government built Forts George, Augustus, and William and a system of military roads in the county in the late 17th and early 18th centuries to facilitate the area’s pacification.

Janet married James McPhail (1791 - 1856) in Cawdor Parish, Nairnshire Scotland on 7 Jul 1815, at the age of 26[4]. James was born on April 22, 1791, in Ardclach, Nairn, Scotland. A year after their marriage they came to live in South Carolina, United States.

They had the following children:

Child: Isabella McPhail
Child: Janet McPhail
Child: Daniel McPhail
Child: Margaret McPhail
Child: Alexander Mcphail
Child: Jane McPhail
Child: Ellen McPhail
