Walter was born in 1923. He married Evelyn Park Pretty at the United Church Manse on Gore St., in Perth, Ontario. A dinner was held for immediate family at the home of Evelyn's father in Hopetown, Ontario. They lived with Evelyn's father and raised their family on Lot 18, Concession 4, Lanark Township, Lanark County, Ontario, Canada.
Walter lived most of his life in Hopetown, Ontario. He loved the outdoors and was a founding member of the Pretty & McKay Hunt Club, a member of the Trinity United Church, and a journeyman sheet metal worker.

Walter passed away at the Rideau Ferry Country Home on Friday, July 27, 2018 at the age of 94 years. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 72 years, Evelyn (Pretty) McKay, his parents James R. and Margaret (Burns) McKay, daughter Brenda (McKay) Crawford, and his brothers Leonard (Lenora) and Allie (Margaret) McKay.
Left to mourn the loss of a loved and respected father are his three children (still living), a daughter-in-law (still living), and two son-in-laws (still living). He will be sadly missed by 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, and one great great granddaughter.[3]
