Biography

Duncan was born about 1811.

In the census of 1841 we have: Duncan McKenzie 30 Ann 30 Roderick 7 b. 1834 Coigach (Lochbroom) Kenneth 5 b. 1836 Alexander 3 b. 1838

In the 1851 census: Duncan 44 Ann 42 Roderick 16 Kenneth 14 Alexander 12 Thomas 9 Bell 5 b. 1846 Catherine 3 b. 1847/8 Christy 6 mths. b. 1850

Between 1851 and 1855 Ann dies. On 17 Jan 1856 Duncan marries Margaret McLeod b. 1818 (parents both deceased) Father Murdo Macleod, mother Mary Stewart.

In the 1861 census: Duncan 53 Margaret 40 Alexander 23 Thomas 18 Isabella 15 scholar Catherine [13] is missing - perhaps she was working elsewhere. Christina 10 Roderick 4 b. 1857 (11 Jan 1857 at Lochbroom) Can we conclude from the re-use of the name Roderick that the first Roderick had died?

In the 1871 census: Duncan 64 Margaret 51 Thomas 28 Christina 20 Roderick 14 In 1871 Catherine and Bella were at Alves in Moray.

In the 1881 census: Duncan 75 Margaret 61 Thomas 37 Roderick 24 William (grandson) 6 William was the son of the unmarried Christina, then 30. Duncan dies in 1888. In the census of 1891 Margaret was a widow, living at Polglass 91-63 with her unmarried daughter Christina, and Christina's two children: the William aged 16, listed above, who was a farm servant, unemployed and a daughter Bella aged 7 who was a scholar. Margaret is listed as the Head and a crofter. In 1891 Thomas, with his brother Alexander and a nephew John were at Polglass 91-73. The death of Margaret aged 82, (b. 1818) was registered as 15 February 1900 at Polglass, her parents noted as having been Murdo McLeod and Mary, (maiden surname Stewart), and the informant was her son Roderick.
