He was baptized on 14 November 1794 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland and his parents were Margaret and Robert McLaren. [1]
(Robert) James McLaren married about 1819 in Scotland to Catherine (maiden surname Latimor or possibly McLaren also).
About 1825 he emigrated from Perthshire, Scotland under the guidance of Chief McNab, and settled on a farm near Sand Point, McNab Township, Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada West. He apparently was one of the "independent-minded men who would not bend the neck before the autocratic old Chieftain" [2] and "cast his eye about for a less irritating place of abode". About 1837 moved to a farm on the 2nd line in Horton Township, Ontario. [2]
He died on 05 May 1860 in Horton Township, Renfrew, Canada West and was buried at McLaren Cemetery in Renfrew, Ontario with his wife and some of their children. [3]
Canada was formed by confederation on 01 July 1867.
