Ike Barr was born Harold Francis McLaughlin on June 4, 1923 in New London, Connecticut. He took the surname of his stepfather as a small child but was never formally adopted. From childhood, he was known by the nickname Ike, which he kept throughout his life[1].
He sat the entrance examination to enter the US Army Air Corps (which was what had motivated him to complete high school), and served his country as a pilot during WWII, largely in France. After the war, he made his living as a plumber in central Florida before buying an orange grove, which he ran alongside his wife into the 1990s, when he retired[2].
