Biography

James W. McNamara, Senior was born February 6, 1871 in Carlisle, Kentucky. He married Cora Dixon before 1893. He had five children by his first wife: Irene, born in 1893; twins James or Cecil and Margaret Lucille, born in May, 1894; John, born in 1896; and Gladys, born in 1898. Cora appears to have died between 1898 and 1900 because the 1900 census shows that these children were living with their grandmother, Mary F. Dixon in Concord, Lewis County, Kentucky.

On 24 June 1901, he married Hallie D. Williams in Bristol, Virginia. James and Hallie had a daughter, Betsy, who died very young, probably before 1906. The couple had four sons: James William McNamara (my wife’s father), born 30 May 1903 in Montgomery, West Virginia; Robert McNamara, born in 1906; Paul Willard “Bill” McNamara, born 10 March 1908 in Portsmouth, Ohio; and Donald William McNamara, born on 12 March 1912 in West Virginia. Hallie left James William in 1911.

Sometime before 1920, James William married his third wife, Rebecca. She was a native of West Virginia and was eight years older than he. The 1920 census listed his employment as “Air Brake Repair Rail Road.” The couple lived at 2937 Galia (Gallia) Street, according to a notation on the side of the census form.

He died on August 20th of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 53. His death certificate listed his address as 2901 Gallia Street, Portsmouth, Ohio. His employer was identified as the “N&W RR,” (Norfolk and Western Railroad.) He was buried in Greenlawn Cemetery, 55 Mary Ann Street, Portsmouth, Ohio.

His obituary, published in the 23 August 1924 Portsmouth Morning Sun, identified his survivors as his widow, Mrs. Rebecca McNamara and nine children: Miss Irene McNamara of Cincinnati; Mrs. Howard Swope of Columbus; Cecil McNamara of Houston, Texas; Mrs. Gladys Ruark of Cincinnati; John McNamara of Chicago; Robert, Willard and James of Princeton, Virginia. Also listed were his brothers Joseph D. McNamara of Portsmouth, and Edward and Frank McNamara of Indianapolis, Indiana as well as his sisters Mrs. Clinton Christy of Huntington, West Virginia, Mrs. John Lubbe of Chicago, Miss Mabel McNamara of Jacksonville, Florida and Mrs. Emory Kinder of Portsmouth.
