Biography

Stephen is the son of John McPherson. He was born about 1772 in the Colony of Virginia or Chester County in Province of Pennsylvania. Descendant's claim his middle initial is W; however, no document has been found with a middle initial.

He married Phoebe Murdock on the 11th of Dec 1794 in Frederick County, Virginia.[1] The family removed to Bedford County Virginia where Stephen purchased 65 acres of land on the 7th of December 1798 from Joseph Thomas which land was noted as bounding on McPherson's line.[2] Stephen was enumerated on the 1800 Bedford tax list.[3] The 1800A Bedford tax list enumerated:

  • Joseph Murdock 1,_,_
  • William Murdock 1,_,1
  • Stephen McPherson 1,_,1
  • John McPherson 2,_,4
  • Daniel McPherson 1,_,2 [brother of John]
  • John McPherson, Jr 1,_,1

His father, John, moved to Belmont County, Ohio and died there about 1804.[4] At this point, the only document found for Stephen in Belmont is as an assignee of a land patent in Belmont Ohio to Caleb Gregg on 21 April 1810.[5] Stephen McPherson and Phebe his wife sold 66-1/2 acres of land in Bedford County, Virginia on the 24th of March 1803 for 100 pounds.[6] This sale is consistent with the sale of his father's land in 1802/1803. Stephen and his father were also on the Bedford County tax list through 1803.[7]

Stephen returned to Bedford county where he was taxed again in1809. [8] He was enumerated on the 1810 Virginia, Bedford Census with

  • three males under 10 [ John, Joseph & Jessie ],
  • one male 26-44,
  • three females 10-15[ Sarah(1795), Mary (1796], Catherine(1799), and
  • one female 26-44.[9]

On the 20th of Feb 1810, Stephen McFerson purchased 92 acres in Bedford county from Richard Berdick and Mary his wife.[10] The original deed is faded and hard to read. Stephen McPherson also purchased from Benjamin Musgrove 30 acres on the waters of Stanton river on the 1st of May 1817.[11]

Stephen and Phebe his wife and Elijah Murdock and Polly his wife jointly sold 184 acres in Bedford county on the 12th of Oct 1816.[12] The land was perhaps inherited given the fact Stephen and Elijah Murdock jointly sold the land.

In 1820, Stephen was enumerated on the 1820 Bedford County Census with:

  • one male under 10[possibly William M on 1831 personal tax list],
  • one male 10-15[Joseph 1808],
  • one male 16-26[Jessie 1803]
  • one male over 45,
  • two female 10-16 [ Mary, Catherine],
  • one female over 45.[13]

The 32 [original deed shows 30] acres on the Stanton river Stephen purchased in 1817 was resold to Christopher Musgrove on the 14th of Oct. 1825.[14] The deed shows Stephen McPherson and Phebe his wife of county of Franklin, Virginia.

Stephen was in Giles County, Virginia in 1830 where his household was enumerated on the Census with:

  • two males 5-10 [possibly Andrew son of Mary born 1821, one may be William possibly son of a daughter ],
  • two males 20-30[Jessie b 1803 & Joseph b 1808],
  • one male 50-60,
  • one female 20-30[Mary], and
  • one female 50-60.[15]

Giles county court records on court held on the 19th of December 1834 show Thomas Harris and Stephen McPherson had forfeited a forthcoming bond for which they did not show up in court. The plaintiff, Reason Vermillion & Co., was awarded a judgement of $111.00.[16]

Stephen was last taxed on the 1836 Giles County Personal Tax List for 1 male over 16.[17] His son, John McPherson, obtained letters of administration for the Estate of Stephen McPherson at Giles County Virginia Court held Tuesday 25 October 1836.[18]
