Biography

Jesse was born about 1803. He is the son of Stephen McPherson and Phoebe Murdock.

On the 3rd day of October 1832, William B. Harris of the county of Giles sold to Joseph McPherson and Jesse McPherson of Giles in consideration of the sum of $140.00 a certain tract of land lying in the county of Giles on Walkers creek containing 250 acres.[1]

Jesse McPherson and Thomas Harris signed a bond for the marriage of Jesse McPherson and Nancy Harris on the 15th day of August 1833 .[2] His father, Stephen, died in 1836 in Giles County Virginia.[3] At a court held Monday the 18th day of October 1839, Jess "M Pherson" was released from working upon public road because of physical inability.[3]

The 1840 Census for Giles County, Virginia enumerated the household of Jesse McPherson with:

one male under 5, one male 30-40,
one female under 5, and one female 30 to 40.[4]

There were several deeds recorded in March of 1840 for Jesse and his brother, Joseph. On the 4th day of March 1840, Joseph McPherson and Laviney his wife sold to Jesse McPherson all their right title Interest and claim to a tract of land containing 250 acres lying and being in the county of Giles on Walkers creek, which tract was deeded from William B. Harris to Jesse and Joseph McPherson.[5] Also on the 4th day of March 1840 Jesse McPherson and Nancy his wife and Joseph McPherson and Laviney his wife sold to Hiram Simpkin all of county of Giles in consideration of the sum of $150.00 a certain tract or a parcel of land containing 100 acres being in Giles on the south side of Walkers and being part of a large survey of 14,500 acres made in the name of Robert McCullock.[6] Jesse McPherson and Nancy his wife sold to Robert Karr of the county of Giles in consideration of $100.00 a certain tract or parcel of land containing 130 acres being part of a survey of 14500 acres patented to Robert McCullock lying and being in the county of Giles on the south side of Walkers Creek.[7]

"Jessee" McPherson was enumerated as head of household on the 1850 Census for Lee County, Virginia as age 47, born in Ohio, and his occupation was a Miller. The other members of the household noted as all born in Virginia were:

Nancy, age 38,
Phebe, age 14,
Mary, age 12,
Rebecca, age 10,
John, age 7,
Joseph, age 4,
James, age 2[8]

The family moved to Morgan County, Kentucky after 1853 where descendants claim he died in 1855. Jesse and his brother, Joseph McPherson, were taxed on the Morgan County tax list for 1853.[9] His wife Nancy was enumerated as head of household on the 1860 Census for Morgan County, Kentucky with two more children enumerated as Samuel H., age 10, and Margarett, age 7, both shown as born in Virginia.[10]
