Death of Collins child blamed on eating aspirin

COLLINS - Jerry Ann McQueen, 29-month-old Collins child, died in Forrest General Hospital Tuesday and her death was attributed by the attending physician to aspirin she is believed to have swallowed Sunday.

About noon Sunday her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. McQueen, found a broken bottle which had contained 100 aspirin on the floor near where the child was playing. Mrs. McQueen said that possibly two dozen had been taken previously and a search turned up only 57 tablets.

Jerry Ann at a full meal at noon and again in the evening and did not show any ill effects until early Monday. She was admitted to Forrest General at 10 a.m. Monday.

A valiant effort on the part of the physician and hospital personnel failed to save her life, although she was given almost a complete change of blood in an attempt to remove the poison.

Services were held at 2 p.m. today at Blakeney Creek Baptist Church, with Rev. Mason Miley and Rev. Carl Sullivan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with Johns Funeral Home in charge.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by two sisters, Karen and Vicki; one brother, David; the maternal grandmother, Mrs. J. J. McQueen of Collins; and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. J. I. Pickering of Laurel. [1]
