Biography

He passed away after 1802.

James McMunn, sometimes seen in records as James McMann, James McMun or James McMon, first appears in NC in a 1777 Tax list for Gloverston District of Caswell County, NC. He then appears in several tax lists for 1779 in Orange County, NC.

On Nov 17, 1790, he and his son William were granted tracts of land 100 acres and 60 acres respectively lying adjacent to tracts owned by William Smith and Andrew Smith (as described in the deeds).

In the first census taken by the United States, both James and William were counted as the heads of their household in the Hillsborough District of Orange County, NC. The reconstructed version of this census can be found online. Both last names were transcribed (incorrectly) as “McMon” (see http://genealogytrails.com/ncar/orange/1790census.html).

All of James children married before 1800 (except for Sarah). In the 1800 US Federal Census of Hillsborough, Orange County, NC, James McMunn is found living with presumably his wife (enumerated as female 45 and older), another female, presumably his daughter Sarah (enumerated as female between 16 and 25), and a female child under 10. This female is possibly the same person as the granddaughter “Ann” named in the Will of Mary McMunn in 1811. Since this same female is found living in the household with Mary in the 1810 US census (along with Sarah) and again with Sarah McMunn in the 1820 US census, it is very possible this is Sarah’s daughter.

On the very last day of 1802 (or December 31, 1802), James McMunn wrote his Last Will and Testament which named five of his six children and the son-in-law that married his sixth: Sarah, William, Ann Harges, Ginny Breace, Elizabeth, and son-in-law James Lindsey. His Will was admitted to probate on March 3, 1803 (therefore likely died in 1803). Robert Smith was the Administrator of his estate.

No marriage record has been found to give a time and place of when/where James and Mary got married.

Mcmann-39 and McMunn-121 appear to represent the same person because: These two people are the same. According to his will, James McMunn (sometimes shown in records as James McMann) had 6 children: Mary McMunn Lindsey, Jenny/Ginny McMunn Breeze, Nancy Ann McMunn Hargis, Elizabeth McMunn Smith, William McMunn, and Sarah McMunn. I believe McMunn is the correct name. The profile for "McMunn-121" is connected to his daughter Elizabeth. "McMann-39" is currently connected to his children William and Mary Lindsey.
