Joseph was the son of George and Sarah (Campbell) McMinn. He was a soldier in the 1st Maryland Militia in the War of 1812 in which he lost an eye at the siege of Fort McHenry by the British. (Note: During this siege there were only six men wounded, Joseph being one of them.) On 28 Feb 1825 he married Elizabeth Livick in Staunton, Augusta County Virginia. They Lived in Belpre Township Washington County Ohio until the 1850s when they moved to Harrison County Missouri. Not long after Elizabeth died in 1867 he moved to Clark County Missouri where he married Sarah Morrison living close to his Daughter Sarah and son in law Jacob H. Gates. Joseph and Jacob are buried next to each other at the Union Cemetery. He was a Cooper by trade.

Josieph was a cooper or barrel maker. Coopers used wooden slats bound together with hoops to make barrels, tubs, churns, etc.
