Biography

Harriet Means, the daughter of John W Means and his wife, Margaret Macamie Wilson, was born in Cabarrus County, North Carolina about 1829. She's first found living there in the home of her parents with sibling John M W Means and a 3 year old female, Sarah A., in 1850. This Sarah will follow Harriet to the next census and will die with "John A Lemmond" and "Harriet Nelson" listed as her parents on her death certificate.[1]

On the 2nd of Feb in 1852, John Q Lemmond posted a marriage bond in Cabarrus County with himself and Harriet C. Means as the marrying parties. The marriage took place that day, according to the North Carolina State Archives. The couple moved to Union County before they are found in their first census as man and wife in 1860. There are 5 children living with them:

  • Catherine Lemmond, (whose birth year is the same as Sarah A Means)age 13
  • Robert Lemmond, age 8
  • Javis Lemmond, age 6
  • Catherine Lemmond, age 5 (this will be Margaret in the next census)
  • Infant Lemmond, age 1

In 1870 the family is found in Goose Creek, Union County. The first Catherine has now become Sarah again, and the second Catherine is now named Margaret. Javis is no longer listed and it is assumed he has died. Also in the family are 5 new children:

  • Charles Lemmond, age 12
  • Abalsom Lemmond, age 11
  • Elizabeth Lemmond, age 9
  • Jane Lemmond, age 7
  • John Lemmond, age 1

Harriet Lemmond does not appear with the family again after this census, and while some researches have listed an undocumented death of 1909, I believe she died and is buried in Union County, or Cabarrus County, North Carolina. I can find no record of death or burial, and no headstone has been found for her.
