Joseph Melcher performed Patriotic Service in Massachusetts in the American Revolution.
Joseph Melcher is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A211929.
Joseph Melcher was born about 1733, the youngest child of four, of Edward Melcher and Elizabeth Bailey.
He married Mary Cobb on 4 October 1757 and by some accounts had 14 children.
He was a housewright by profession (felled trees, made boards, built homes), and settled in Bunganock, Maine.
According to his profile in the DAR records, in 1775 he served as a member of the Committee of Inspection in the Revolutionary War. In 1777, a Joseph Melcher served with Captain George White's Company, Brunswick, Cumberland County, Maine. This was probably his son, as he was killed in action. [1]
His youngest son, also named Joseph, was killed "on Ipswich bar in a storm."[2]
He died on 21 August 1821, age 86, and is buried at Maquoit Cemetery in Brunswick, Maine.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Joseph by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Joseph:
We know through the York Co. court records that his father lived in Arundel in 1744 - which was what Kennebunkport was called from 1701 to 1821 (Wikipedia). Until I learn more, I think York County is the safest label.
Looks like there are 2 Joseph Melchers who served. One may be this man's son who is mentioned in MA Soldiers & Sailors as part of Capt. White's company and killed in battle in 1777. According to DAR database, Joseph Sr. contributed patriotic service as part of committee of inspection, not a ranked veteran.
I just checked the DAR website - ancestor search - he is listed there - easy to find - I posted the reference info on his profile - right below the "bell".
I don't have a reference - Maine wasn't a state then - it would have been part of Massachusetts - I would go back and check those records if you haven't already.
Present day Portland was part of Falmouth 1786. Cumberland County was made from a portion of York County in 1760.
Topsham was part of the Pejepscot Purchase prior to 1754
Bruswick was part of the Pejepscot Purchase prior to 1739
Perhaps his birthplace was Falmouth, York, Province of Maine, Massachusetts Bay
Found birth records of two sons (1798, 1802) but they disappeared after 1802 when wife Rebeckah died.
