Biography

Susanne (Jacot) Dorey was a Huguenot emigrant (1540-1790).

Susanne (Jacot) Dorey was the daughter of Jean-Jacques and Susanne (Unknown) Jacot. She was baptized 30 January 1721, at Champey, Franche-Comté. She married first, Jean-Nicolas Dorey, 12 November 1743, at Trémoins, Franche-Comté; their children were:

  1. Jeanne (Daree) Vienot baptized 30 April 1744 at Trémoins,
  2. James Dorey baptized 1 May 1746 at Trémoins,
  3. Catherine (Daree) Joudrey born about 1748, - SJAL
  4. Unknown a child born about 1750 who died at sea in 1752,
  5. Jean-Urban Dares baptized and died in 1753,
  6. Mary Margaret Dorey baptized 16 January 1755, - SJAL
  7. John Peter Dorey baptized and died in 1756, - SJAL
  8. John George Daree baptized 15 March 1758, - SJAL
  9. Elizabeth Margaret (Dorey) Robar baptized 30 August 1760, - SJAL

  12. Catherine Margaret (Dorey) Legge baptized 4 May 1766 - SJAL.

Her second marriage was to Léoplod Frederick Langille, August 8, 1775. In his entry for this, Punch states that Susanne "is the widow of Nicolas Daré and the daughter of Jean Jacques Jacot.[1]

Parents

RESOLVED "Her name is reported as Susanne in a somewhat ambiguous entry in Punch's Immigration to Nova Scotia, 1749-1752, p.77, with no last name only stating that she was born in 1721 and they were married at Tremoins and that she was the daughter of Jean Jacques (no last name) and Susanne Jacot."[2]

There is no mention of a Jean Jacques and Susanne Jacot in Punches work in the pages for the Jacot family, pp. 98,99. On page 122, however, he identifies her, "Léoplod Frederick [Langille] = [marries] (II) 27.8.1775, Susan ~ [Baptised] 30.1.1721 at Champey + [Died] 19.4.1775, dau. of Jean-Jacques JACOT, and widow of Nicolas Daré."

Internet Trees have propagated the myth that Susanna Menegaux is the wife of Nicolas Daré. Although there is information for "a" Susanne coming to Nova Scotia aboard the Speedwell in 1752, there is no source to indicate that a "Susanne Menegaux" is the Susanne who lived to adulthood and married Jean Nicolas Dare.

More on the Menegaux research

Jean Frederic Menegaux passed away not long after arriving and was buried in March 10, 1852. His wife Ann Geney passed away in August or September of 1752.

Their children, at the time of their parent's deaths? Catherine, the oldest died on the voyage to Nova Scotia in 1752. Jean-George died in Halifax in December of 1752, Susanne Margurite died in October of 1752 the rest of the children survived to adulthood, Elizabeth, George and Ann-Marie.[3]

The other Menegaux family of Jean George, had a Susanne as well, Susanne Catherine, but she married Matthieu Langille. And did not marry Nicolas Daré.

One source has her death date as 1786? She was buried in St. John's Anglican Cemetery, Lunenburg, Nova Scotia[4]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Susanne by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Susanne:

Hello Mags,

I agree that Susanne Menegaux probably refers to the Susanne who married Matthieu Langille and was not the Susanne married to Nicolas Daré. I will approve the merge with Susanne Jacot but with reservations that there is not enough evidence that Jacot is the correct name either, the only source being an "ambiguous" (as you say) reference in Punch's Montbélliard Immigration. You may note, and I possibly have this wrong, that on page 77 of Punch, he says Susanne Darés second husband was Leopold Vienot…

Also there is a lot of discrepancy in terms of when this Susanne was born and died and I'm curious as to where some sources have determined the death date of Nicolas' wife as 1776?

That said, I appreciate the research spent on this. I think more evidence would allow for a more definitive ancestry line and think this should be included in notes on the Susanne Daré (whoever she may have been) profile.

Thanks! Nadine King

Hey Jim, Norman and Sherry,

I got Punch's reference book on the Montbéliard immigrants today and have scoured it for the answer to Susanne Menegaux vs. Susanne Jacot as the wife of Nicolas Daré. He absolutely states on page 122, that Susan Jacot is the widow of Nicolas Daré when she remarries Leopold Frederick Langille. I am going to work on removing the children from this profile and add them to the profile for Susanne Jacot. And I will be disconnecting Nicolas as this Susanne's husband. I will work to find out about this Susanne Meneagaux and attempt to make the appropriate connections for her if there are any to be found. Mags

Menegaux-21 and Menegaux-2 appear to represent the same person because: Same place of birth. Same daughter. Discrepancy in date of death. Include the alt date of death in the bio if no sources to resolve. Thanks for reviewing.

Menegaux-9 and Menegaux-2 are not ready to be merged because: information pertaining to the wife of Jean-Nicolas Dorey should be moved to Susanne (Jacot) Dorey (Jacot-44)
