Biography

George was born in Witney, Oxfordshire, the son of Gregory Merryman. He passed away before 1656.

Occupation: Cooper

Two conflicting records implying the birth of George. Mansfield Merriman believed they could both be true, if the apprenticeship perhaps had the wrong dates.

  • Birth c 1585: Found in the Court minutes of the Worshipful Company of Coopers (London) held Thirsday the xixth day of Jene 1606. "This day Raphaell Warter brought into this Court one George Merryman the sonne of Gregory Meryman of Whytney in the county of Oxon Weav and psented him heare has desired this Company to take notice of an Indenture of Appnticep dated the xviiith day of ffebruary 1598 whereby the said George was bound unto him for ix yeares from the day of the date of said indenture and submitted himself to the censure of the table for binding him forth of his howse who in regard of his posstye and subission forgave his fyne and tooke onely of hym in the respect of the pntemt ... xx d."[1]
  • Birth before 1572: 19 Jan 1593/4 and 13 April 1594, applications made by George Merryman for lease on a house in Singleton and a tenement in West Smithfield.[2]

In the records of the Court of the Worshipful Cooper Company: 4 Oct 1610 George paid 3s 4d for "his hubley by Taxhall worter." George paid 20p for apprentice John Roman 27 July 1635 (for eight years) and 20p for apprentice William Myles 16 Nov 1638 (for eight years). His dues was marked in arrears 1656 and 1658, one being crossed off with red ink. George had died in 1656.[3]

The Will of George Meriman, citizen and cooper of London, 31 October 1655 was proved 19 May 1656. "I do give unto my son Nathaniel Merriman, now resident in New England, the sum of ten pounds of lawful English money; and unto my daughter Elizabeth Norman, who I have already advanced in marriage with Master John Norman, I give twenty shillings to buy her a ring in remembrance of my love. My servant Henry Allison to serve out the remainder of his time of apprenticeship with my son John Merriman. The residue to son John who I do hereby make and ordain full and sole executor &c."[4]

I have changed his birth year from 1559 (for which the bio gives no basis) to the date 1585 based on his apprenticeship. The 1559 makes no sense. He would then still be working and having apprentices at the age of 96 when he passed away ~1655. The birth 1585 puts this to a reasonable of still working age of 70.

I've been trying to merge this with https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Merriman-152 For some reason it doesn't go through the normal process, but just says I've approved the merge. Brian could you try proposing the merge. Death date is ok. The birth should be either one of the dates listed in the bio or no date at all. Thank you.

Done. Thanks for pointing this one out.

There appears to be a spouse for George Merriman recorded in England Marriages, 1538-1873, https://www.familysearch.org/tree/person/sources/L89K-WDK. Her name is Anna West. She may have predeceased George which would explain why she is not mentioned in his will. Any objections to including?

Merriman-86 has "Children included George, Anna (bpt 23 Jan 1561) and Henry (bpt 4 Jun 1570) bptisms recorded at Witney.[1]"

However, George Merriman-68 above, has "[sibling(s) unknown]".
