Military Service

Private in Company A of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry of the Union Army, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was about 21 years old, married and working as a boatman when he enlisted on 5 March 1863 in Hudson, New York. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.

Research Notes

There is a William Merritt in the Schenectady Almshouse in New York in the 1890 United States Veterans Schedules. No regimental details.
