NOTE: Some of the siblings claimed above are unconfirmed.
James Metcalf (Jr) was born in 1777 in Virginia. He was the son of James Metcalf and Sarah Maney. (His grand-daughter was Julia Metcalf McLean, a daughter of his son Levi Metcalf, and, according to Patricia Gaultney Rose (see source below), a great-grand-daughter of James Metcalf, Sr. [1])
James Metcalf (Jr) married Mary Ann Oxford (born 1779 in North Carolina). [2]
Mary Ann Oxford Metcalf died before 1850. (One unconfirmed source indicates 1846.)
The 1850 federal census for Yancey County, North Carolina (part of which formed a portion of Madison County in 1851) listed on 19 November, found James Metcalf, age 70, born in Virginia, with second wife Alice Metcalf, age 48, born in North Carolina, at dwelling #1232/ family #1294.
James was farming, with real estate valued at twelve hundred dollars. At census family #1293, was James' son Levi Metcalf, age 29 and farming, with his wife Drucilla, age 26, and two children: Mary age 3, and Julia, age 1. [3]
The federal census of 1860, listed for Madison County, NC on 13 June, found James "Midcalf", age 83, and born in Virginia, at census house #118. With him was "Alie" (presumably Alice), female age 60, born in North Carolina. James was farming, with real estate valued at five hundred dollars, and personal property valued at $4,160. At census house #119 was Drucilla Midcalf, James' daughter-in-law and widow of James' son Levi, who had died the previous year. With Drucilla, age 36, were four of their children: Polly, age 12; Julia (mentioned above), 10; Henry, 9; and Robert, 7. [4] [5] James Metcalf apparently owned eight slaves. The slave schedule recorded for "James Midcalf" on the same date as the 1860 census lists the ages and genders of eight individuals: Mulatto [?] female age 50, Black male age 40, Black male age 24, Black male age 20, Black female age 10, Black female age 10, Black male age 5, and a Black male age 3. [6]
James Metcalf (Jr) died in December 1863. [7] See image of probate page. James' children identified in the probate documents are these: Jacob Metcalf, Ann Metcalf Merrill, Sarah "Sally" Metcalf Chandler (wife of Larkin Chandler), Lucinda Metcalf Chandler (wife of Martin Chandler), Rebecca Metcalf Buckner (wife of Haley Buckner), Matilda Metcalf Ingle (wife of Jackson Ingle), Celia Metcalf Burleson (wife of George Washington Burleson), Nancy Metcalf Buckner (wife of John Buckner), and Levi Metcalf (deceased).
