Biography

Leonard Metcalfe of Tatterford, the Rector of Tatterford and West Barsham (b. c. 1540/1 Apperdale, Wensleydale, Yorkshire - d. Sep 1616 West Barsham, Norfolk; bur. 22 Sep 1616 St. Margaret, Tatterford, Norfolk).[1][2][3][4]
This profile is part of the Metcalfe Name Study.

On Dec. 23, 1614, Leonard Metcalf gave a deposition before the Church of England's diocesian court:

"Leonard Metcalf, clerk, rector of the parish of Tatterford, where he has been [the] incumbent for forty years, born at Apperside, [in the ancient parish of Wensley, North Riding], co. York, aged 73 years." [Deposition Book, 1614, Diocesian Registry, Norwich.[5] His parents, however, are still uncertain.

According to Cutter (1915),[6] Leonard is thought to be a son of William Metcalfe and a nephew of Leonard Metcalfe of Bear Park (d. after 1570),[7] who was incarcerated and attainted for taking part in the Rising of the North. It's obvious that he can't be the son of Brian Metcalfe (d. 1501) of Bear Park in Wensleydale, Yorkshire and Johanna "Joan". Metcalf (1898),[8] however, believed that the reverend was the son of the rebel himself. Other researchers have also suggested that it might be impossible to determine Leonard's parentage, given the prolific use of his given name among numerous of Metcalfes of Yorkshire.[8]

Marriage & children

He married ca. 1579, Amy____. She was born about 1558, probably near Tatterford, Norfolk and died in Dec 1602, aged about 44 years. She was buried on 22 December 1602.[9]

They had at least 8 children:

  1. Rev. Richard Metcalf. Born 1580[1] (or 1582/3)[10][11] in Tatterford Parish. Died March 1656/7, about 77 years old. Buried on 11 March 1656/7.

  4. Nicholas Metcalf. Baptised 03 Sep 1586 or 08 Jul 1587 in Tatterford,[13][11] or born on 3 February 1586/7 in Tatterford Parish and baptized on 8 July 1587 in Tatterford Parish when five months old.[1] Died about 14 September 1661 in Blakeney, Norfolk, England, about 74 years old. Buried in September 1661.[1] Will proved 16 Sep 1664 Norwich).[13][11]

  3. Nynian Metcalf. Baptized on 20 (May or Sep) 1596 St Margaret, Tatterford, Norfolk).[16][17][18] Or baptized on 10 June 1596 in Tatterford Parish.[1]
  4. Mary Metcalf. Baptized on 28 August 1601 in Tatterford Parish. Died in December 1601 in Tatterford Parish. Buried on 7 December 1601 in Tatterford Parish.[1]

Education

"Metcalfe, Leonard. Matric[ulated] pens[ioner] from St John's, [a constituent college of the University of Cambridge] Lent 1563-4; B.A. 1568-9. R[ector] of Tatterford and West Barsham, Norfolk, 1603. Father of Nicholas (1607)."[11]

Occupation

"Rev. Leonard Metcalf was rector of Tatterford, in the diocese of Norwich from 1573 (the first year his name appears as rector) until prior to his death in 1616."[2] In 1614, he was succeeded by Richard Metcalfe or Medcalfe as rector of Tatterford.[19] He was also the rector at West Barsham in 1603.[11]

Research Notes

Disputed parents

"A thorough re-examination of the surviving records would appear to confirm the conclusion made in the 1932 Metcalf article that it is impossible to determine the paternal ancestry of Michael Metcalf beyond his father Leonard. Moreover, a search of over 500 parish registers in Norfolk has not revealed a marriage for Leonard Metcalf. We conclude that Leonard's wife was perhaps the Amy Leonard buried in Tatterford, Norfolk, 22 December 1602, and that Leonard was perhaps the son of Richard Metcalf of Apperside, Yorkshire (where Leonard was born)."[20]

Disputed child

James Metcalf was previously shown as possibly son of Rev. Leonard and Amy (Unknown) Metcalf, but the only source found for this connection is an LDS Ancestral file with no sources, (LDS : Ancestral File Number: MGV6-4S). This file has been changed to reflect a James, son of John, born in 1505. Madison-125 18:00, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Metcalf-2268 and Metcalf-45 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles Leonard Metcalfe Rector of Tatterford died 1616, born Wensleydale.

I separated Metcalfe's (2002/12) construction because it differs from others to the point where it can be confusing. BTW I found a PDF copy of his work,[1] and there's a companion html doc as well.[2]

Haven't added all the kids to the other construction just yet ...

BTW, re: attaching or detaching parents ... I'm for the majority vote of the crowd. I understand if some want to leave him attached for traditional reasons and I understand if some want him detached ... so it's up to everyone else:) ... That said, I will admit that I have a tendency to lean towards this family being somehow closely related to Metcalfes of Bear Parke in spite of their choice of religious sects. I find it tough to ignore the onamastics, particularly the names Leonard, Nicholas, Richard ... They do fit:D

I agree with Joe. Linking the possible parents in the bio would suffice until any new evidence is found and published.

There is no actual evidence as to his parents, and the most recent article on the Metcalfe's concluded his parents are unknown. His parents should be detached.

So consent to Bobbie's proposal. B

With consent of both of the PM's, I removed James as a son of Leonard, pending any reliable sources, leaving a link to his parents in his bio.

I've added the children's data from the Metcalf (2002) genealogy. There is no mention of a son James, btw.

Matriculated at Cambridge University in 1564, so probably born about 1544. Son Nicholas was age 20 at matriculation. Just trying to provide a basis for an estimated birth.
