Biography

James was born March 18, 1753 in Stafford County Virginia the son of William Matheny and Elizabeth Parker. He passed away in 1832. [1]

He was a Private in 1st Company, 5th Pennsylvania Regimen. Transferred in 1780 to Captain John Pearson's Company 9th Pennsylvania Regimen. In May 1783, James was commissioned Ensign in Captain Andrew Ferley's Company Battalion, Washington County Pennsylvania Militia commanded by Colonel Henry Enock.

James was an Ensign in the American Revolution, Washington County, Pennsylvania Militia.

James and Mary went to Washington County, Pennsylvania, and then to Preston County, Virginia in 1784. They went to Beech Run Hill, Pleasant District, Preston County, Virginia and purchased from Amos and Elizabeth Roberts 400 acres of land in 1789 for 30 pounds ($100).

From the Benjamin Metheny bible: "James Metheny son of William and Elizabeth Metheny was born the 18th day of March in the year 1753" and further states that "James and Mary Metheny were married the 8th day of September by Elder James Lawthorp in the year 1771." It is probable that the "Elder James Lawthorp" therein mentioned was the famous Quaker minister, James "Gawthorp, who made preaching tours among the Quakers in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and finally settled at Applepie Ridge, Frederick County, Virginia, in 1773 (Recd Bk.16,p.50). The place of the marriage was probably in either Jefferson County, West Virginia, or Shenandoah County, Virginia, both counties then being part of Frederick County.

Ensign James Metheny purchased lands in that part of Monongalia County which is now Preston county in the year 1783 and in the year 1785 appears for the first time in the Monongalia County personal property tax lists. Nathan Metheny Sr, followed James to Preston County in the year 1787 although he apparently retained his land in Peters township as he was assessed there in the tax list of 1789 and the following year his son Joseph ("Josey") Metheny appears in the Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, U.S. Census of 1790, apparently occupying his fathers lands.

James Metheny resided in Morgan Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania prior to 1785. He then moved to "Beech Run Hill", Pleasant District, Preston County, West Virginia and Hampshire County, Virginia. It was known he was a Justice of the Peace, but it is not known if it was in Preston County or Hampshire County.

Ensign James died April 10, 1832 in Preston County, West Virginia.

James was born in 1753. He passed away in 1833. "James Metheny and his wife, Mary, came to Beech Run Hill, Pleasant District, Preston County, W. Va., and purchased of Amos and Elizabeth Roberts 400 acres of land in 1798, for the sum of thirty pounds ($100). In later years this was known as the Henry C. Martin Farm. Children: 1. Nathan - b.
