Biography

Zeri was born in Glen Sutton, Lower Canada in about 1823, the son and only child of James Miller and Amy Barnett. The year of birth is gleaned in consideration of the various censuses referenced below.

Zeri was active in 1840 thru 1842 in the Canadian Militia Volunteers[1].

In about 1850, he married Almira Betsy Stubbins, with whom he lived in the United States for a time after the marriage. They had the following children that we are aware of:

  1. Etta Ocena, b. abt. 1850; m1. Mr. Jackson, abt. 1870; m2. Thomas Church Gears, 1 Nov. 1889
  2. Alphonso Zeri, b. 1853; d. 22 Oct. 1858;[2] and
  3. Amy Vernetta, b. 18 May 1857; m. Philo B. Jerome, 25 Dec. 1876; d. 19 May 1940.

Both children are listed on the 1860 census, (ages 10 and 3) but only Amy on the 1870 census.[3][4] There may have been an additional child "Alphonso" b. abt. 1853, in Westfield, VT.

Zeri appeared in the Vermont State Directory in 1870, resident in North Troy[5]. In the census of that year (reference above), he was listed as a "blacksmith". He sold that business in 1873, considering the following news clipping:

"Troy. Norris D. Martin of Craftsbury, has bought of Zeri Miller his blacksmith shop in North Troy village."[6][7]

In Dec. 1876, it was further reported, that:

"North Troy. Z. Miller has sold his lot of land near the village, to J. W. Currier, for $400."[8]

By 1881, Zeri was living back in Potton, Quebec, Canada[9]. Again he was listed on the 1891 Potton census as a farmer[10]. He is listed under the "Potton" section of the 1892 Eastern Townships Business and Farmers Directory, albeit with a North Troy, Vermont address in addition to his "Range 7/ Lot 3" location in Potton[11].

He passed away in 1896 and was interred in Province Hill Cemetery in Potton, Quebec[12]. His wife Almira survived him for three years - passed away 1 July 1899 - and was interred by his side. The following Death Notice appeared at the time.[13]
