SHERMAN A MILLER - Although a resident of Scotia but a comparatively few years, Sherman Miller, now justice of the peace, is one of the best known men in the township and exceptionally popular. He is a Republican and takes an active interest in the affairs of his party, whether local, state or national, and is an acknowledged power in the political situation at Scotia. He is also well known in a business way and stands very high in commercial circles.
Mr Miller is a native of Tennessee, born at Blue Springs, Hamilton County, May 5, 1865. When he was three years of age his parents removed to Kansas, locating in Wyandotte county, where the father engaged in farming. There Sherman grew to young manhood, attending the public schools of the district and assisting his father on the farm. in 1887, when he was twenty-two years of age, he came to Oregon, in company with his father, and there found employment as a farm hand for a time, and later went into business for himself in Portland, where he owned and conducted a barber shop, which he opened in 1889. Later, in 1891, he went to Hillsboro, where he also owned and conducted a barber shop, meeting with great success, and remaining until 1895. He has been at various places on the coast for periods of varying length, generally working at his trade of barber, having spent some time at Seattle and Ellensburg, Wash., Portland and Hillsboro OR, San Francisco, Oakland and Scotia. Mr. Miller came to California in 1900, and has spent most of the intervening time in this state. He owns a fine residence property in Oakland, where he made his home for some time, and where he was married to Miss Zua Guider, of San Francisco, in 1907. Mr. and Mrs. Miller have five children as follows: Pearly, Edith A., Arvilla, Illa and Sherma.
When Mr. Miller first came to Scotia he engaged in the barber business, opening a small jewelry department as a side line. In this latter line he prospered, and in 1906 he went to San Francisco and learned the watch repairing business, and on returning he enlarged his stock of jewelry and has since that time made this his specialty. He now carries a complete line of jewelry, silverware and watches and also handles the Eastman Kodaks. His stock is all high grade and every article that he sells is guaranteed to be up to standard and quality. This stock is valued at more than 4,000.
Mr Miller is very popular with his many friends and political constituents, and is especially well liked in his official capacity. He is a member of the Woodmen of the World, being affiliated with the lodge at Seattle.[11]

Miller is a native of Tennessee, born at Blue Springs, Hamilton County, in that state on May 5, 1865. When he was three years old his parents moved to Kansas, where his father engaged in farming. He attended schools there and assisted in farming.
As a young boy he had started across the plains from Kansas with his parents and brothers in a covered wagon, but his mother became ill and the family returned to Kansas at that time. As a young man he again started for the west coast , and made it that time, settling in Oregon and later in Washington, about the turn of the century coming to California.
In 1916 he left Humboldt county and lived in Oakland. His wife died there in 1917. He moved to Pittsburgh, CA in 1918 and had a jewelry store there until 1923 when he moved to Del Norte County, where he opened a jewelry store in Crescent City. He was remarried in 1920.He held the office of public administrator in Del Norte count for two terms, taking office the first time in 1924. He was well respected in his business and public offices and had many friends throughout both counties.
He closed his jewelry store in Crescent City, due to illness and moved to Humboldt county in 1930. He had a small repair shop at home and did some private selling on the side. He retired from active selling and watch repairing about 19 years ago.
He also operated a barber shop for a number of years during his earlier life, including several years at Scotia, where he also had a jewelry store.
Fishing has been on e of his hobbies and he has always had a keen interest in political affairs.
Miller was one of the early pioneers featured in the "History of Humboldt County" published in 1915. The author there described him as"one of the best known men in the township and exceptionally popular."It added that he was a republican and took active interest in the affairs of his party, whether local, state or national and was an acknowledged power in the political situation at Scotia. He was further described as being "well known in a business way and standing very high in commercial circles".
The history then related the various occupations he followed, as mentioned above.
Although past 90 miller is alert and interested in all that goes on and pleasant to visit with. Besides his five daughters, he has 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.[12]
Although the above states Blue Springs Hamilton County, I found information from FAMILYsearch.com (Latter Day Saints) that Sherman was acutally born in Blue Springs Station, Bradley County. It did have the complete listing of father and mother so I tend to believe it.

Research Notes
Without a doubt, Sherman Andrew Miller is related to the Swafford family of Tennessee.
The parentage of Sherman Miller is confusing for me. Though DNA shows a connection to both of his mothers parents, I have found none tying him to the Miller family.
The idea that he had a different father than John Manson Miller is supported by a biography of John Manson Miller which stated regarding his marriage to Malissa Stiles:
"Six children came to bless the union, four of them boys and two girls. All except one daughter are living."
I have also been unable to trace the daughters, nor have I found any photographs of them.
In Sep 2020 I finally was able to locate descendants of the paper trail brother of
Sherman Miller. The results were frustrating. The descendants have no recent DNA matches to the Swafford family.
All the descendants of all of Sherman's children have recent connections to the Swafford family.
The descendants of the siblings of Sherman's wife do not have recent connections to the Swafford family.
One of Sherman's parents was definitely related to the Swafford family.
There are recent connections to Sherman's wife, Mallisa Stiles and to both of her parents.
Sherman's descendants are equally or more closely related to the siblings of Mallissa.
The descendants of Abbie Stiles are most closely related to the descendants of Sherman. Abbie and Sherman are close in age. Abbie has a brother named Andrew born the same year as Sherman Andrew Miller.
All of Sherman's descendants share matches with the Swafford Family.
The descendant of his wife, Zua, who had one child prior with a Devine, do not share the matches.
All of my other branches of my tree show no significant number of Swafford matches.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Sherman by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA.
However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line.
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Sherman:
My grandmother was Geneva Miller (although my mother had always told me her name was Eva Geneva Miller and I've also seen where she could have actually been Eva Geneva Roberts) and I am having a hard time finding anything about her. My mother had asked my grandfather about when and where she died and he refused to tell her anything and had given her letters Geneva had written to him but he had ripped the dates off. Also on one of the letters the name Rose miller had been written on the back. If anyone has ANY information on her I would love to know. Thank you
Thanks!
