Miller Migration

Story from "Down Memory Lane" by Anna Eloise (Miller) Anderson - Memoirs from her life

"Grandpa Miller (George W Miller) had gone west before, perhaps in 1870, leaving Terre Haute, Indiana migrating across Illinois to Iowa. He and his young family settled in southern Iowa near Leon on the Grand River and as their children grew up and married, they farmed little towns and named them Grand River, Van Wert and Decatur after a town in Indiana. But the pioneer blood was in their veins, so when new territory opened up farther west, my Daddy (Richard J Miller) was in the procession headed west.

I don't know how they crossed the Mississippi River or the Missouri but it must have been an ordeal and as I look back from my point of view today, life in general must have been an ordeal. Food, shelter, water, ammunition, all the things we take for granted were as uncertain as the weather. Still they traveled on, determined to face whatever obstacles necessary. They refused to turn back.

Indians and buffalo still claimed the land. That too was a challenge. But they traveled on to the northwest, always looking, searching for that one special spot he would someday call home.

This was the great prairie. He had heard of acres and acres of beautiful grassland - but not a "tree". He must build his home from the sod. Long hard days follwed, cutting, lifting, sweating, stacking blocks of earth dreaming, planning, aching for that little house that will someday be his home. A home that would be a shelter from the cold and a quiet peaceful place to rest when the day was done."
