Biography

Ireland Native
William Minchin H.M.C.R.R. was born in Ireland.

William Minchin was born in about 1821. He was the second son of Charles Humphrey Minchin and Amelia Wright.

He joined the Military in about 1842; 'William Minchin, Gent. to be Ensign by purchase, vice Fleming'.

His older brother Stephen Wright Minchin died in September 1849 at the age of about 31.

William married his double first cousin Rebecca Minchin (the daughter of Reverend William Minchin and Mary Anne Wright) on 24 December 1850 at Templeharry Church, Kings County, Ireland[1]:

Dublin Evening Mail 27 December 1850, Page 3:
MARRIAGES.
December 24, at Templeharry Church, by the Rev. Robert J. Going, Captain Wm. Minchin, Ceylon Rifles, eldest son of Charles H. Minchin, of Rutland, King's County, Esq., to Rebecca Mary Anne, daughter of the Rev. Wm. Minchin, of Green Hills, in the county Tipperary.[2]

They had no children.

He was a Captain in the 95th Ceylon Rifles. He succumbed to Consumption (Tuberculosis) on 11 September 1851 soon after taking his new bride back to Ceylon with him. The Indian sub-continent was notorious for claiming the lives of many young "white militiamen and civilians". You can still visit the 19th Century colonial graveyards where the tombstones are so close together, you can hardly walk between them.
