Biography

James was born about 1724. James was the child of James Mize and Elizabeth Hamlin. James passed away about 1770.

James Jr. married Mary (last name unknown) about 1746. It appears they have six children that survived into adulthood, John, James, Elizabeth, Henry, Joseph and Shepherd.

James Mize Jr. patented 200 acres of land in Lunenburg County on 5 July 1751. James' father purchased 167 acres from Francis Wray in 1748 which he left to his son William Mize in his 1761 will. William conveyed this land to James Mize Jr. James Mize Jr. paid taxes on 360 acres of land in 1764 in Lunenburg County, which accounts for his land grant of 200 acres and the 167 acres that was his fathers.

The court ordered an inventory/appraisal of James Mize’s estate in December 1770. He left his son John the 60 acres “where he lives”. He left his son James 50 acres at the upper end, bounded by a new line. The remainder of the land was to be divided among the rest of the children after the death of their mother and remainder of the estate to his wife Mary to raise and maintain the children. Sections of this land were sold by Henry, Shepherd and Joseph Mize.

Elizabeth Mize married John Chisolm on 2 February 1772 in Lunenburg County. The surety was John Mize. Since John was her surety, and Stephen did not mention a daughter Elizabeth in his will, we can assume Elizabeth is a daughter of James Mize Jr.
