Biography

Johann Henrich "Henry" Mohler was born 29 September 1711 at Haßloch, Bad Dürkheim, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany and baptized on 4 October[1]

He was married at Haßloch on 5 May 1734 to Maria Catharina Drucktenhengst as the bachelor Henrich Mohler, the son of the deceased Mathyss Mohler from Basel, with Catharina the single daughter of Jacob Drucktenhengst from Hofheim.[2]

At the baptism of his children Anna Maria in 1734, Johannes in 1739, Margaret in 1742, Maria Magdalena in 1744 and Anna Catharina in 1747, Henry Mohler was listed as a shepherd or sheep herder. That is likely why baptisms for children were located at five different locations of Kappellen-Drusweiler, Hassloch, Billigheim, Mörzheim, and Böbingen which were close to each other.

As Henry (his mark) Mohler he arrived on 7 October 1749 at Philadelphia on the ship Leslie.[3]

On 21 May 1763 Henry Mohler, Yeoman, of Berwick Township, York County, Pennsylvania for 100 pounds purchased 90 acres in Berwick Township from Peter Shugart of York Town in York County. The tract was adjacent to Clement Studebaker and Henry Jacobs. The witnesses were Jno. Boyd and Jac. Moore. Shugart acknowledge the deed on the same date before Geo. Stevenson, Justice.[4]

On 4 April 1772 Henry Mohler of Berwick Township, York County, Pennsylvania, Yeoman, and Catharine his wife sold to Valentine Prizzel, Yeoman, of the same, for 250 pounds, a tract that was from a warrant 1 April 1751 laid out to Peter Shugart a tract of 90 acres [metes and bounds] adjacent Clement Studeberger,Widow Knipfer, Sarah Presseld, and Henry Jacobs and whereas the said Peter Shugart on 21 May 1763 sold to said Henry Mohler entered in Book B p. 83 Signed: Henry (MO his mark) Moler, Catharine (X her mark) Moler Witness: Jos. Boude, Jacob (IMO his mark) Mohler Received the date of the foregoing 200 pounds. Signed Henry (HMO his mark) Moler Witness: Jos. Boude IMO mark of John [sic] Mohler 4 April 1772 acknowledged by Henry Mohler and wife Catharine (examined privately) While not stated, Valentine Prizzel (Pressel) was Henry's son-in-law, and the witness Jacob Mohler was his son.[5]

Henry Mohler was in a 1779 tax list for Berwick Township, York County.[6] He was still in Berwick Township as late as 1785.[7]

As Henry Moler he wrote his will on 11 June 1796 and it was probated on 1 May 1797 in Frederick County, Maryland. To his grandson Henry Moler son of Jacob 10 pounds, To son John 5 shillings and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten 60 pounds, To son Valentine 5 shillings. To daughter Margaret Pressel 5 shillings. To son Jacob the residue and remainder of estate and who is also executor. Signed: Henry (H and circle with dot his mark) Moler Witness: James Mark, Paul Coons, Solomon Mohler [German script] 1 May 1797 brought to court by Jacob Moler, executor of Henry Moler and proved by Paul Coons and Solomon Moler[8]

As this Henry Mohler died in Frederick County, Maryland, he is sometimes referred to as "Maryland Henry," not to be confused with Henry Mohler, Sen. (about 1700-1769) who was of Ephrata, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and sometimes referred to as "Ephrata Henry" to distinguish the two.

Y-DNA EVIDENCE

Descendants of Henry Moulder through his sons Jacob (M-14, M-22, and M-25), Valentine (M-1) and John (M-3. M-10, and M-18) have tested and match closely with each other. All those descended from Jacob share what appears to be a branch marker of 37 on DYSCDYa. The descendants of John share a branch marker of 11 on DYS511. All are also a close match with a descendant of Veith Mohler (M-9), born say 1530, of Diegten, Baselland, Switzerland. All are also close matches with descendants of Ludwig (Lewis) Mohler (1696-1754) and Heinrich "Henry" Mohler, Sen. (about 1700-1769), both of Ephrata, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania[9]
