William first appears in the Charlotte County, Virginia personal tax records in 1786, as a male above age 21, in the household of his father-in-law, William Staples.[2] He next appears as head of his own household in 1789 and in 1791, but is missing from Charlotte County tax records in 1790 and 1792. But in 1792 his father-in-law gained a white tithable, so it is possible that William was residing with his in-laws at that time.[3]
He is again found in the Charlotte County personal tax records from 1793 through 1809.[4]
Research Notes
Possibly the same William Monday in Halifax County, Virginia...?
More research is needed to prove this.
A William Munday is taxed in Halifax County, Virginia on July 27, 1792, appearing for the first time in the county tithes.[5]
Resident of Halifax County, Virginia on May 23, 1811.[6]
In the 1820 census for Meadsville, Halifax, Virginia, Enumeration date August 7 1820 – William Monday listed, 1 male under 10, 1 male 10 thru 15, 1 male 45 and over, 1 female under 10, 1 female 26 thru 44. 1 person engaged in agriculture. Free white persons under 16 is 3, free white persons over 25 is 2. Total free white persons 5. John Dunkley is listed next to him (a John Dunkley married Tabitha Monday 25 Apr 1797 Halifax County). [Age of wife suspect… too young to be Nancy (Staples) Munday. Possibly indicating that William’s age is also too young (closer to age 45). Did he remarry or is this the wrong William?]
In the 1830 census for Pittsylvania, Virginia, William Monday listed, 1 male 15 thru 19, 1 male 20 thru 29, 1 male 50 thru 59, 1 female 10 thru 14, 1 female 50 thru 59. Free white persons under 20 is 2, free white persons 20 thru 49 is 1. Total free white persons 5. [note: age is wrong to be William. May be connected instead (son, grandson?) to the Jeremiah Munday family of Pittsylvania County]
