Carmelo Mondello is born around 1807 in Corleone, based on his reported age at death. He is the son of Bernardo Mondello and Maddalena Finocchio.
Carmelo marries Rosaria Oliveri on 4 October 1835. Bernardo and Maddalena are still living at this time.[1]
Carmelo and Rosa (as she is called in most records) have at least ten children together: Vito (1836), Maddalena (1838), two sons named Bernardo (1841 and c. 1851), Calogero (1842), Andrea (1844), Vincenzo (c. 1846), Vincenza (1847), Calogera (1854), and Salvatrice (1857).
Vito is born and baptized 1 August 1836, their first born child. His godparents are Vincenzo and Vincenza Mannina, brother and sister. Contrary to tradition, he is not named after Carmelo's father; two brothers born after Vito are named Bernardo.
The first son named Bernardo dies on 9 July 1841, at six months of age.
Calogero dies on 1 November 1842, two days old.
Andrea, named after his maternal grandfather, dies on 28 November 1844 at seven months of age.
Vincenzo, and the second son named Bernardo, are known from the records of their deaths in infancy.
Calogera dies on 31 July 1854 at a month and a half of age.
