Richard Montagu was the younger son of Sir John Montagu, K.G., Earl of Salisbury, by his wife Maud Fraunceys (married c1382/83). Sir John was beheaded 7 January 1399/1400.[1]

I doubt Thomas, 4th Earl of Salisbury, was survived by his younger brother Richard or a nephew Edward. An inquest post mortem held after his death in November 1428 found that his nearest male heir was his 60-year-old uncle Sir Richard Montagu/Montacute: see Entail in Tail Male: The Earldom of Salisbury 1337-1428 and E-CIPM 23-263: THOMAS, EARL OF SALISBURY.
