Paul, in Scots Peerage, states that Marion was the sister of John rather than the daughter.[6] His source, however, is Paterson, who shows that she was the daughter of John.[1] Montgomery also cites Paterson but while maintaining that she was the daughter of John.[2] With Marion's second marriage taking place after 1541, it is difficult to believe that she would have been born before circa 1490 although more clear dates for her first marriage or first child would help clarify this question.
Marion was the third wife of her second husband, William Sempill, whose first wife was named Margaret Montgomerie. Marion is often confused with Margaret.[7]
Marion's father died on 9 Sep 1513 placing Marion's birth no later than 9 months after that date.

Montgomerie-349 and Montgomerie-2 appear to represent the same person because: It appears this second Marion (Montgomerie-349) was created as the first Montgomerie-2 was linked to the wrong father. This error might well have started with James Balfour Paul in Scots Peerage who cited Hugh Montgomerie as the father rather than his son John. That this was an error on his part is seen in the citation by he makes where the cited work clearly states that the father was John.
