Research Notes

Robert has previously been shown on WikiTree as a son of Arnulph Montgomery. This is what is stated in Wikipedia[3] and by Marlyn Lewis;[4] Balfour Paul's Scots Peerage points out that the first mention of Robert in Scottish records is not before 1164, making it unlikely he was a son of Arnulph, and considers it more likely he belonged to a later generation of the Montgomery family.[2] There is no reliable evidence as to who Robert's parents were.

If the source should be treated with caution, shouldn't the relationship to Philip b 1102, and wife Margaret Dunbar be uncertain?

Eaglesham is in Renfrewshire, not Ayrshire, Scotland. Can this profile be corrected?

De Montgomerie-14 and Montgomery-1584 appear to represent the same person because: Both men have a source naming him as the Robert Montgomery who witnessed the Charter of Paisley. See Balfour's Peerage p 422 https://archive.org/details/scotspeeragefoun03paul/page/422/mode/2up?view=theater and Montgomery's History and Origin of Montgomery p 42 https://archive.org/details/genealogicalhist00mont/page/42/mode/2up?view=theater

The name of Montgomery is first recorded in Scotland in 1165 when Robert Montgomery obtained the lands of Eaglesham in Renfrewshire. A descendant of this Robert, Sir John Montgomery, was one of the heroes of the Battle of Otterburn. He distinguished himself by capturing Sir Henry Percy, who was known as “the Hotspur”.

This encounter was chronicled in a vivid Borders ballad:

“The Percy and Montgomery met That either of other were fain; They swapped swords and they twa swat And aye the blood ran down between.”

The Percy family paid a great ransom for the release of Hotspur, and this money enabled the Montgomery clan to build the Castle of Polnoon. The old castle of Skelmorlie, near Largs, is now the home of the chiefs of the Montgomery clan. http://www.scotclans.com/scottish-clans/
