Note

Note: Legend gives us the origin of the surname of Moon and tells us it was first bestowed as an honor. Here is the story:
"The Norsemen were great travelers and some of them went to France and settled in what is now Normandy and became a part of the Normans. They had a brotherhood called the "Order of the Crescent" the men of which were tall, with fair complexion and blue eyes, and with character above reproach. When William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy, invaded England in 1066 the Order of the Crescent went with him. One of the native strongholds proved to be very stubborn and the Duke was unable to take it. He called for volunteers and the Order of the Crescent came forward. They successfully stormed the castle and William ordered that each member of the brotherhood be called "Moon", in honor of the event."
The members of the Moon colony in England prospered through the years, leading honorable lives, giving of their time to the religious life of the community. During the Reformation and later during the times of rebellion against the Church of England the Moon's were staunch Protestants and Puritans. Among the many who suffered persecutions for their religious beliefs we find a number of Moons. They were followers of George Fox, founder of the Society of Friends, members of which were called Quakers as a term of derision.

Name

Name: William Edward /Moon/[1]

Note

Note: [243764.GED]
This individual's name is NOT William Edward, there are two individuals we are unable to distinguish between - William OR Edward, EITHER of which could have been the father of James Moon, Senior. It would be extremely unlikely that this one individual had these two names, as middle names were not yet in common usage. Still looking for proof of the correct given name.

I believe that I descend from James Moon or a near relative, but have been unable to tie my ancestor William Moon (b 1744) to his descendants due to gaps in records. My William served in the Revolutionary War in Northumberland PA (not Bucks County) and then migrated to what became East TN in the late 1790s.

I have completed a Big Y test at FTDNA, and I match another man who believes he descends from a son of James and Joan. Our MRCA is estimated to be born around 1600, so this would fit the time frame for this William Moon or one of his descendants.

I would be very interested in seeing YDNA for another known descendant of these Moons. I encourage any male descendant to consider the Big-Y test, as a few more tests would greatly help us firm up the family tree.
