Biography

On January 11, 1750 John Moore, Jr. married a Quaker girl by the name of Elizabeth Sanders, the daughter of John Sanders, Jr.

On August 14, 1756, just six years after he was married and one year following the birth of his son, records indicate John Jr. requested to make a move to North Carolina. Exactly why and where he wanted to go is not known, however it is clear that things were not going well for him.

Elizabeth Moore and Elizabeth Price complained to the Cedar Creek Monthly Meeting about John Moore, Jr. The exact nature of the complaint is not clear.

Whatever it was John Jr. did, it was bad enough to cause his marriage to end in divorce. On February 7, 1760, while still in Louisa, Virginia, he married a 23-year-old woman from North Carolina named Sarah. Two days later the Quakers disowned John Jr. for marrying outside of church requirements.

Death

On July 25, 1795, at age 69, an ailing John Moore, Jr. signed his will. The document can be found in the Rowan County, North Carolina Will Book E, page 84 Citation Text: "In the name of God, Amen! This 25th day of July AD 1795. I, John MOORE of Rowan County and State of North Carolina enjoying my usual reason and understanding, though weak and indisposed in body and calling to mind the uncertainty of human life, think proper to constitute and appoint this to be my last will and testament in the following manner revoking and disanulling every and all wills here to for made by me. Imprimis, I humbly bequeath and recommend my soul to God who gave it and the body to the ground to decently buried at the discretion of my executor here after to be nominated hoping through the mercy of God and the merits of my savior to a joyful resurrection at the last day, and a happy reunion of soul and body in endless bliss and glory. I give and bequeath unto my son, John MOORE, one tract or parcel of land on the south west end of the track of land where I now live on, beginning in Alexander LONG's line, where it crosses the Rocky-Spring branch, and running thence with his line south to his corner and thence, as the deed directed around to the beginning including the plantation which he now lives on. Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Charles MOORE, one tract or parcel of land on the west end of the same tract of land, beginning at the sink-hold landing, on the south bank of the Yadkin River and running thence South nearly as I have marked it off to John MOORE's line thence with his line down the Rocky-Spring branch to Alexander LONG's line, thence north with his line to the River, thence down the river to George REED's line, thence with his line around to the river, and then down the river to the beginning, including the plantation on which he now lives. Item, having already made a deed of conveyance to my son Audley MOORE of his full share of my land, my will is that he should hold & enjoy the same & no more. Item, I give and bequeath unto my son, Edward MOORE, all the remainder of my land, including the plantation which I now live on and half an acre on the North side of the river Yadkin which George REED has bargained to give me in exchange for an acre of my land on the south side of the said river, and for which he has a deed from me. Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Camm MOORE, twenty pounds common currence of the State to be raised by sale of such articles of my personal estate as shall be not otherwise particularly here in mentioned, and which my executors may judge most convenient to be spared from the estate for that purpose. Item, Having already given to my three daughters, Anne, Susanna, and Sarah, such part of my estate as I think them equally and justly entitled to, my will is that they should have one shilling sterling each out of the remainder of my estate now in my possession, paid them by my executors. Item, I give and bequeath my daughter, Mary one bed and furniture, one chest, one large and one small iron pot, one Dutch oven, one loom, with all the gears proper or belonging to it and one large and one small spinning wheel. Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth, one bed and furniture, one chest and one small spinning wheel. Item, I give and bequeath unto my daughter Prisilla, one bed and furniture and one chest of drawers, and my will is that each of my three daughters last above mentioned should have one cow and calf paid to them by my son Edward with whom I wish them to live as long as it may be agreeable to all parties, either when they marry or when they choose to have them. Item, I give and bequeath unto my son Edward all the remainder of my estate not already mention, after my funeral expenses, all my just debts and the legacies above particularized are paid and settled out of it. Lastly, I nominate and appoint my two sons, John and Charles joint executors of this my will and testament and in testimony of the Authenticity of the whole and every part of the same, do here unto set my hand and affix my Seal this day and year above written.
