Edward was a lifelong resident of Sheffield, Massachusetts.
He was 5 foot 10 inches (1.78m) tall with a brown complexion, black eyes and black hair.
During the Civil War, he served as a Private in Company B of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color. He was 36 years old, married and working as a laborer when he enlisted on 7 December 1863 in Sheffield, Massachusetts. Mustered out 20 August 1865 with his regiment.[1]
His next door neighbor in Sheffield, Edward Augustus Croslear, also served in Company B.
