Biography

David Morgan was born about 1795 in Virginia, in what is today West Virginia. This date and place are taken from census records.

I have not been able to find a marriage record yet for David, but his wife is presumed to be Mary Sroufe, sister of Jonathan Sroufe, who later appears on the census with Morgan family.

David Morgan is a common enough name that I cannot be sure where he is on the earlier census records, but there is a David Morgan approximately the correct age and household on the Brown County, Ohio Census in 1830. Brown is a neighboring county to Highland.

The 1850 Federal Census for Clay Twp, Highland County, Ohio, shows Uriah and Harriett Morgan living in the household of David Morgan, presumed to be Uriah S. Morgan's father. This David Morgan, and his wife Mary and children Uriah, Anna and Josiah, all moved to Decatur County, Iowa prior to 1856.

His children Celestina Malissy, Lavina, Uriah, John, Amy Auria (Anna), and Josiah all married in Brown and Highland counties, Ohio before the entire family moved to Iowa.

No will has been found for David Morgan, he appears in the household of his daughter Celestina Davidson on the 1870 census, his wife probably deceased. Also listed in the household is Jonathan Sroufe, presumed to be Mary Sroufe's brother.

The family history back to Uriah S. Morgan, David and Mary's son was given to me via a handwritten family tree, and family stories told to me by my grandmother Wilma Jorgensen Jameson, as they were told to her by her mother and grandmother. Everything she told me going back to Uriah S Morgan and his wife Harriet Fry has so far proven to be true.

I took the family tree back from Uriah S Morgan to David and Mary (Sroufe) Morgan through the census records as described above. At this time I do not have any furthur documention on this family.

I have however recently taken a dna test, as well as had my aunt, and my great aunt (as my father and grandmother are deceased) tested, and we come up as close cousins to many of David Morgan's descendants, as well as matching to a number of Uriah Morgan and Sarah Prickett's descendants.

Uriah Morgan's will, which was probated in March of 1851, names a son David. Having looked at several branches of the Morgan family, and tracking various David Morgans of approximately the same age, I believe he belongs in Uriah Morgan and Sarah Prickett's family.

I would welcome further discussion on these generations.
