Biography

There seems to be very little documented evidence to verify what is claimed about Thomas prior to 1850, at which point he was nearly 80 years old.

From late documents, we can place Thomas' date of birth at about 1779, somewhere in Virginia. He is said by some to have been the son of John and Elizabeth Morgan of Shenandoah County.

As a young man, Thomas moved to Hamilton County, Ohio, where he married his wife, Elizabeth. According to a Sangamon County history published in 1876, Elizabeth was actually the widow Elizabeth (Bell) Butler.

In 1822, Thomas and Elizabeth moved to a farm in Sangamon County, Illinois. In 1830, now in their 50s, the couple was residing in Sangamon with an unidentified female child, between ages 5 and 9.[1] Residing next door was Thomas Morgan Jr and his wife.

In 1850, Thomas was residing on a farm in Sangamon County with his wife, Elizabeth, and two adult grandsons, Marcena and George Morgan. Also residing with the couple was a young woman named Sarah Jackson and her infant son, George.[2]

It is said that Thomas and Elizabeth eventually, moved to Schuyler County, Illinois, where both Thomas and Elizabeth are said to have died in 1858.
