Note on Parents

Edward Morgan of Gwynedd, Pennsylvania is not the son of Sir James Morgan, 4th Baronet of Llantarnam and Alice Hopton. James Morgan and Alice (Hopton) Jones, widow of Nicholas Jones were married in 1695, at which time Edward Morgan was a married man with children and already in Pennsylvania.

While many would like to create a lineage of royalty, the parents of Edward Morgan are unknown. [1] [2]

Marriage

The second marriage of his son William in 1731 (see children, below) gives his parents as Edward and Elizabeth Morgan. So - Edward MORGAN married Elizabeth. Three of Edward's sons signed as witnesses of the marriage of their sister Elizabeth in 1710. They were then adults, so born before 1790. This suggests Edward married before 1685.

Edward's wife - suggestions:

  • Margaret (Unknown) Morgan. Margaret, p. 43-1, 1719-3-9, widow [of Edward Jr. - pencilled in] of Philadelphia Co., PA, married Rees David at Gwynedd MH. First intentions announced 31th of the 1 mo 1719. This was the wife of Edward's son Edward Jr. who died in 1718. Some of the children of Edward Jr have been confused as the children of Edward Sr.
  • Elizabeth JARMAN (b: 1678 d: 1731) b. 1678, Wales; d. 1731 at Gwynedd Montgomery County Pennsylvania, (Children: Benjamin Morgan and Elizabeth Boone) Wrong children, could not have married by 1685.
  • Elizabeth WILLIAMS born about 1664 in Wales. Sister of John Williams. The sources[6]to make the connection were found by MableJaneStone and noted on Elizabeth Jarman's profile by Molly Cunningham. Overall a Will shows that Elizabeth's son Daniel Morgan is the nephew of John Williams. There are also Williams witnesses on Morgan marriages, and Morgan witnesses on Williams marriages.

Notes

About 1704 the road going thru Gwynedd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania was built and he bought land there. He moved there. By 1708 he was an early Settler of the Welsh Colony of Gwynedd, Berks County, Pennsylvania when he was described as "a tailor by trade, a Welshman by birth, and advanced in age". [2]

In 1708 he purchased 300 acres land in what is now called Towamencin.

His land adjoined that of William John and this became the boundary line for the township.

In 1714 Edward attained 500 acres of land.

Edward [Morgan], 1709/10-1-6 - signs subscription paper for 5 pounds towards the building of the new Meeting House. Perhaps the first settler in Towamencin township, a chart showing his children is on the Morgan Log House site. He removed to Montgomery township before 1723 when he transferred the deeds of his property to his sons John and Joseph. His wife Elizabeth was an active member of Gwynedd Meeting (see below). Besides contributing to the building of the new Meeting House, the documentation for Edward primarily consists in signing the marriage certificates of his children and neighbors in Montgomery. Debate continues amongst the museum staff on how much of the Morgan Log Home was built by the Morgans as opposed to later owners of the land. The genealogy of his descendants has been well studied because of the connection to the pioneer Daniel Boone (son of daughter Sarah Morgan).

Morgan came to Pennsylvania in 1698 and settled north of the area's main Welsh settlement in Gwynedd. Edward Morgan bought 309 acres of that land on February 26, 1708. The Welsh Valley Preservation Society now operates tours of the Morgan Log House.

Edward Morgan was born about 1670 at Monmouthshire, England (Wales). He married Margaret Elizabeth Jarman about 1686. Parents of Sarah Morgan.

I have reordered the 'children' of Edward based on verification. I found 10 children of Edward, 4 grandchildren, and tried to identify who the others are. I will leave it to the profile managers to review the results and disconnect those who are not Edward's children.

Edward is not the father, but the grandfather of connected son Enoch Morgan-12210. Someone please connect Enoch to his correct parents, Edward Morgan-1688 Jr, and his wife, Margaret Unknown-377253. See Margaret's profile for the source - son Enoch mentioned in Margaret's Will.

It is impossible that Edward Morgan married a daughter of John and Margaret Jarman. See my article at https://genealogynut.blogspot.com/

where I lay out my reasoning and sources.

I am in agreement that some of the claimed children likely are wrong or have incorrect information! Some are claimed to have been born in Wales after Edward was in PA. Others claim birth in Virginia and New Jersey? New Jersey could be believable as it is across a river from Philadelphia.I have seen this family expanding over time on this and other sites. Caution should be used before adding more children who happen to be Morgans.

That is the name of an Ancestry.com database that contains full text of hundreds (maybe thousands) of books. The page number is meaningless without the title of the book. Check for the name of the book. It probably can be found under "Source".

Further consolidation of the two merged profiles, attempting to find citations for each of the supposed children. Too many unsupported yet. suspect cross of generations.

Wive: Elizabeth Jarman

Wife: Margaret may be wife of son Edward, suggests certain of the children belonged to Edward Jr. and Margaret
