James & Judith Morton Venable married ca. 1757 and first settled in Charlotte County, VA. Although he was engaged in agriculture in that county, he also served as Justice of the Peace in 1769, was an Elder of the Briery Presbyterian Church & was a Trustee of the Hampden-Sydney College from 1775 through 1779. Both he and Judith were part of the late 1700s pioneer movement when they moved to KY from VA to develop an 1,800 acre plantation in Shelby County. The plantation was given to James by his father, Abraham Venable II. According to an article in the 2003 "Shelby County History", the plantation was bounded by the Mulberry and Guist Creeks and the Trammel & Stapleton Roads, north of Shelbyville. The crops included tobacco.
