from Soloman Moser and Mary Ann Foust, et al, by Charles E. Moser: Soloman Moser was born in North Carolina (family tradition says in Randolph County) in April 1796 [1] [2]. His family moved to Anderson County, Tennessee and he was drafted from Anderson County into the Tennessee Militia in Nov 1814 and subsequent service until his discharge in May 1815 [3]. He married Mary Ann Foust on 1 Mar 1818 [4] in Knox County, Tennessee, and moved his wife and first born son, Christian, to Preble County, Ohio in 1819. The move to Preble County apparently was undertaken to locate near the parents, Christian and Anna Catharine (Albright) Foust, of Mary Ann. One can speculate that the young couple may have lived with the Foust family for some time in accordance with a common custom of those times.
Soloman and Mary Ann, in 1824, bought 53+ acres of land [5] from the Fousts and made their home in Preble County until they moved to Randolph County, Indiana in the 1830s. This move was probably precipitated by the premature death of Christian Foust in the fall of 1830 shortly after the Foust family moved to a new 160-acre farm in central Randolph County. In any case, Solomon and Mary Ann bought 50 acres of the Foust land [6] when it was sold to settle Christian's estate. They retained this land and added other parcels from time to time until Soloman's death on 13 Jun 1872 [7].
Soloman prepared a will on 6 Mar 1871 in which he designated Mary Ann as the executor [8]. However, there was an attempt by one son, Solomon J., and son-in-law Samuel J. Pursley, to coerce the executor into forgiving a substantial sum of money owed to the estate in the form of a court judgement and a note. This led to court action following which Mary Ann was removed as executor and replaced by a William Ruble and then later by Christian Moser. Since Mary Ann was left a life tenancy in a major portion of the land, the estate was not finalized until 13 Apr 1887 following the sale of the land [9]. Mary Ann Moser's personal estate was settled on 14 Jan 1889 [10].
Soloman is buried in the old Methodist Episcopal Church burying ground portion of Woodlawn Cemetery near Maxville (formerly Macksville), Indiana. The cemetery is slightly more than a mile "as the crow flies" from the homestead. Cemetery officials (in 1977) stated that an American flag is flown over his grave year around as his headstone marks the only identified veteran of the War of 1812 in the cemetery. Many of his descendants are buried in the "new" portion of the cemetery while others (in 1977) still lived across the road from the old homestead on one of the miscellaneous parcels included in his estate at the time of his death.
