Biography

1850 and 1870 census say he was born in Maine.

By 1880 he was in Milwaukee Wisconsin. The census says he was keeping a boarding house. It looks like he was living in the household of a widowed Mrs. McGinnes who was a nurse born in New York and whose parents were born in Vermont. She may perhaps have been some relation? Joseph was living with Mary Jane, and children Jessy, Nelly, and James.

He filed a patent (US patent 200,217) for an improved fencepost in 1877. His patent application says he was still living in Comanche, Iowa. His son Charles was one of the patent Witnesses.
