Biography

On 19 May 1719, Mary Munday, administratrix of Thomas Munday returned his estate account for 1718. Payments made to James Munday. Signed by Mary Munday, administratrix. ^[1]

On 17 September 1729, Thomas Munday of St. Ann’s Parish, planter, in love and affection of his brother James Munday of St. Ann’s Parish gave James a piece of land or wood land, “part of a tract of land given by Thomas Munday of the aforesd pish [sic] County & Colony decd Grandfather to Thomas Munday party to these presents by his last will and Testament to Thomas Munday of the pish County and Colony aforesd decd father to the aforesd Thomas Munday party to these presents relation being thereunto had may more fully and at large appear…” Signed with the marke of Thomas T Munday. Witnesses: Salvator Muscoe, John Munday, Thomas Merritt. Recorded 16 December 1729. ^[2]

On 17 October 1732, James Munday and Thomas Merritt, planters, jointly purchased land in St. Ann’s Parish from Benjamin Graves for 2,000 pounds of tobacco. ^[3]

On 15 March 1735, Thomas Merritt sold to James Munday his interest in the property they had jointly purchased of Benjamin Graves. ^[4]

On 20 October 1739, James Munday of St. Ann’s Parish, planter, sold 130 for £30 to William Jones of South Farnham Parish. ^[5]

On 5 May 1744, James Munday, planter, sells to William Beverley, Esquire, the 115 acres on which he now resides in St. Ann’s Parish, purchased of Mary Pagett, widow. ^[6]

On 6 May 1744, William Beverley, esquire, leases to James Munday and Lucy his wife the land that they had sold him the previous day. The lease is for life, with rent due every 29 September for 2 shillings 4 pence sterling. ^[7]

On 23 April 1745, James Munday witnessed the will of John Pagett of the Parish of South Farnham and County of Essex. ^[8]

On 18 June 1745, Peggy Pagett and James Munday were bound £100 sterling for Peggy Pagett’s execution of the last will and testament of John Pagett. ^[9]

James Munday received material property in the 1748 will of his mother Mary Munday and was named executor. James presented the will in court on 17 January 1748/1749. ^[10]

“To all People to whome this shall Come I Mary Pagett widow and Relict of Ephraim Pagett late of Essex County decd Sondeth Greeting Know ye that the sd Mary Mary Pagett for And in Consideration for the sum of four Hundred & fifty pounds of Tobacco to be paid to her Yearly by James Munday Senr his heirs or assigns, hath remised released and forever quit claimed, and by these presents doth fully and absolutely remise & unto the sd James Munday his heirs or assigns all manner of Dower and right of Title of Dower whatsoever…” Signed Mary Paget, James Munday. Witnesses: Richd Covington, Wm his x mark Gordon, Wm Parker. Recorded 21 July 1752. ^[11]

On 18 August 1752, James Munday and Lucy his wife sold to William Beverley the 115 acres on which they live for £30. This is the land that had been leased to them by Beverley in 1744. Signed James Munday, Lucy munday. Witnesses: John Martin, William Pollard, John Lee. ^[12] The original of this deed is extant with the original signatures. ^[13]

On 20 May 1753, James Munday witnessed Mary Haile’s acknowledgement to a deed from Thomas Haile and Elizabeth his wife of Essex County of John Latane. ^[14]

On 4 December 1755, a James Munday cast a vote for Captain James Garnett for burgess of Essex County. ^[15]

On 22 September 1762, administration of the estate of James Munday deceased was granted to Lucy Munday his widow, with John Clements her security. ^[16]

On 22 November 1767, his wife Lucy independently sold property that he had purchased from Lucy’s sister Mary Paggett, so he had presumably died by that date. ^[17]

On 15 February 1768, on the motion of John Boughan, James Croxton and Thomas Chilton, Essex County court ordered that John Edmondson, James Booker, Thomas Wood and James Banks or any three of them settle the administration of James Munday and divide and allot the estate according to law. ^[18]

1771 Munday's Division of Land

Observations and Dimentions of 293 Acres of Land lying in the Parish of South Farnham in the County of Essex and on the branches of Piscataway Creek, it being part of the Estate of James Munday and Lucy his wife (Dec.d) To which the sd. James & Lucy having five Daughters. They being Coheirs the sd. Land is Equally Divided a Mong them this 30th Day of January 1771.

A, is James Banks & Wm. Dunn's corner where stood formerly a white oak on a Level.

B, is two corner Chinchequamin trees of Thos. Shelton's & James Croxton's on the aforesaid Dunn's line.

C, is a corner Dogwood and White Oak on Dunn's line of James Croxton & Lucy Munday.

D, is a corner ash fallen down in a Branch of the aforesaid Dunn's & Nathaniel Dunn's.

E, is two Pines corners of Lucy munday & John Boughan on ye aforesaid Nathaniel Dunn's line'

F, is Nathaniel Dunn and John Edmondson's corner white oak.

G, is a corner red oak of John Boughan's and Betsey Munday's on John Edmondson's line.

H, is a corner Hickory of John Edmondson's and James Boughan's.

I, is two corner white oaks & Pine of Betsey Munday's & Lucy Mundays on James Boughan's line.

K, is a corner red and white oak on James Boughan's line of Lucy Munday's & James Croxton's.

L, is three corner Pines of James Croxton's and Thomas Shelton's on the line of (Capt.) Thomas Roane's.

M, Roanes & Banks's corner Beach stump on the south side of a Branch.

N, is three Spanish Oaks of John Boughans & Betsey Munday's on Lucy Munday's line.

In obedience to an order of Essex County Court, We the subscribers have met & Examined Sundry Vouchers & papers produced by Lucy Munday Adminx. & Widow of James Munday decd. relative to her Administration of the said dscsdents Estate, & by the Consent & Approbation of the parties Claiming the Personal Estate We find that the disburesment & Expences in raising & maintaining the Children & Negroes after deducting the several demands against the sd. dsesdent amount to the full Value of the Personal Estate, & therefore we made no division thereof. We also have divided the Negroes among the several Children as well as the money arising from the Sale of the Negroes Cork & Milley, as follows,

Vizt. to John Boughan who married Ursula, Nan Valued to £35. & to receive of the Negro Money £14.0.4¾ amounting to £49.0.4¾, to Thomas Shelton who married Katherine, the Moiety of Negro Harry Valued to £30 & to receive of the Negro Money £19.0.4¾ the whole amounting to £49.0.4¾, to James Croxton who married Mary the Moiety of Negro Harry Valued to £30 & to receive of the Negro Money £19.0.4¾ the whole amounting to £49.0.4¾, to Lucy Munday the Moiety of Negro General Valued to £30 & to receive of the Negro Money £19.0.4¾ the whole amounting to £49.0.4¾, and to Betty Munday the Moiety of General Valued to £30 & to receive of the Negro Money £19.0.4¾ the whole amounting to £49.0.4¾ which Several Negroes & Money we have allotted accordingly. We also have with the Assistance of Richard Brown Surveyor divided the lands between the sd. five Daughters, as follow Vizt. the Lot No. 1 Containing Fifty Eight & three quarters acres, to Thomas Shelton & Katherine his Wife, to James Croxton & Mary his Wife the lot No. 2 containing 58¾ acres to Lucy Munday the Lot No. 3 containing 58¾ acres to Betsy Munday the Lot No. 4 containing 58¾ acres and to John Boughan & Ursula his Wife the Lot No. 5 containing 58¾ acres which several Lotts of Land We Assigned to the Several Children Accordingly, but for greater Certainty We refer to the Plat. hereto annexed Given under our hands this 14th day of December 1771.
