Daniel, possibly the son of Daniel and Lydia Mun of Massachusetts, may have been born in 1781.[1]
Daniel Munn emigrated to Upper Canada and in 1806 secured a crown grant as a settler on land located at the corner of the Sixth Line and Dundas Highway, Trafalgar Township. The crossroads became known as Munn's Corners. Daniel and his wife Millicent opened a tavern and stage house on the southeast corner at some point before 1814.[2] At around this time Daniel also became Trafalgar's first town clerk.[3]
During the War of 1812 Daniel served as a private in the 2nd York Militia with his brother-in-law, Ezekiel Post. From November 6 to 10, 1813, Daniel served in Captain William Thompson’s Company of the 2nd York Militia. [4]
On February 26, 1814, Daniel’s tavern licence was renewed. [5]
From September 25 to October 1, 1814, Daniel served in Captain Thomas Merrigold’s Company of the 2nd York Militia. [6]
Munn's Tavern was the site of an affray in which John Holliday, a gunner with Captain Alexander Cameron's Company, was killed.[7]
The 1816 Trafalgar Township Assessment recorded him owning 400 acres. [8]
On November 27, 1817, Daniel and 15 other men from the township attended a meeting in his inn to draft a reply to Mr. Gourlay’s questions. [9]
As the little community grew, a log cabin school was erected on the Munns' property. It doubled as a church on Sunday. Daniel also sold the land for a cemetery (Munn's United Church Cemetery) to a group of local men whose names appear on the deed dated November 5, 1820 (it was not registered in the Halton County Registry Office until July 27, 1822).[10]
In 1822, Daniel died and was buried in Munn’s Pioneer Cemetery. [11]
The Estate of Daniel Munn sold land to his son Jordan in 1841.[12]
