Biography

Josiah Munroe was born on 25 Jan 1764, in Canterbury, Connecticut Colony, to Sarah Mary Hyde, age 31, and Josiah Munroe, age 35. Josiah's father died at Valley Forge on Feb 22, 1778. Josiah was 1 week shy of his 14th birthday, and his father, Josiah Sr. was 49 years old. 2 years after his father's death, Josiah II volunteered to serve as a substitute for his brother who had been drafted. Josiah II served 3 months in the Connecticut State Militia, helping build 'gabions & fascines' in defense of Chatham. Josiah enlisted in the Connecticut State Brigade in 1781, in Captain James Dana's Company, Brig. Gen. Waterbury, Command. During this term of enlistment he was a part of an engagement with the British at Frogs Neck, and building a fort at Stamford. Within 2 weeks after his 1st enlistment ended, Josiah reenlisted in the army as a private under Capt. Charles Miles. Again stationed at Stamford, he was engaged in several skirmishes with British troops before being dismissed in April of 1783. According to 'The Genealogy of Josiah Munroe' (pg 229) & a note in his pension file (pg 184) Josiah II enlisted yet again, this time for 3 months in an artillery unit' of the company his father was in when he died. He was discharged on Feb. 26, 1784. Josiah Munroe married Susanna Andrus in Connecticut in 1784 when he was 20 years old. 1 historical Document, 'Pawlet for 100 years' lists this as the year of the marriage to Susanna Andrus, 'The Genealogy of Josiah Munroe' states that the marriage took place "probably in Connecticut" which would coincide with this same period of time. According to his pension papers, Josiah moved to Pawlet in 1785 or in 1787 along with a number of other Revolutionary War veterans. The first census of the United States shows Josiah living in Pawlet Vermont, with a male child, and two females in the family. Other sources show these to be his son, Jesse, and his wife and daughters, Susanna, and Lucinda. Josiah Munroe served in the military in June 1833 in Pawlet, Vermont, when he was 69 years old. Josiah's pension papers were lost or delayed. In June of 1833 he inquires as to their whereabouts, and is advised to file a second application, which he does. Meanwhile, his original papers are found, and both sets sent to the Pension Dept. for approval.Josiah's pension is approved by the War Department on November 19, 1833, and he is issued a check for $240 for back-pay from the approval date of the pension program by Congress in 1831. Josiah Munroe died on November 9, 1846, in Pawlet, Vermont, when he was 82 years old.
