Biography

George lived at 44 Grant St, Wick, Caithness as a child with his father, Henry, mother, Margaret, 2 sisters and 4 brothers. At 20 years of age he was working as a cartwright.

He married Ann Miller on 2 March 1855 in Wick, Scotland. They had 5 children before coming to Australia - Henry who only lived for one day 1855, Elizabeth (1856), another son, Henry 1858, Margaret (1860) and Ann 1862, all born in Caithness according to the 1861 Scottish census. George was a cartwright/master ironer. His parents came from Orkney. His parents came from Orkney. George with his wife, Ann and their four young children left London on 31 October 1863 aboard "the Pride of the Ocean" and after a voyage of 140 days landed in Melbourne on 8 February 1864. [1]

In 1903 the family was living at 14 Grey St, Yarraville - Australian Electoral Roll

George and Annie Murray were listed as living in Lang St, Surrey Hills, Kooyong in the Australian Electoral Rolls, 1913 #1833 and #1830. George's occupation was listed as a carpenter - the same as listed on his daughter, Margaret Murray's marriage certificate. George's age at death in 1913 was listed as 82 years. His death place was Surrey H, Victoria. In 1914 only Annie Murray is listed at that address in the Kooyong electoral roll. George died the same day as his daughter, Catherine, and they were both buried the day after at the Box Hill cemetery. George died of heart failure at the age of 82.
