Biography

George E. Murray was born in March[1] 1848[2][3] or 1851[4][5] or 1852[1][6] in Alabama[2][3][1][5][6]. The earliest sources tell us that he is born around 1848, which makes this the most likely birth year. His parents are currently unknown. His father might have been born in Alabama [3][5].

In 1870, George was living as an au pair with the Huskey family in DeKalb, Alabama [2].

Married life

In 1880, George was living in Upper, Dade, Georgia, United States together with his wife Lizzie, and his kids Mary (8), Jasper (6), Laine (4) and Grace (1). He was a farmer, and all kids were born in Georgia [3].

In 1900, George was living in Choctaw Nation together with his wife Elizabeth, and his kids John (18), Allison (17), Hattie (13), Laurie (10), William (6), Carl (5) and Jewel (2). All kids were born in Georgia, except for John, who was born in Arkansas. It shows that George is a farmer, John a farm hand and Allison, Hattie and Laurie are all at school. More importantly, it also shows that George could read, write and speak English. He rented his home. It is likely that George was not the informant for this record, as no birth place is mentioned for both parents [1].

In 1910, George was living in Dow, Pittsburg, Oklahoma, together with his wife Elizabeth, children Larry (19), Willie (15), Carl (13) and Jewell (10), all born in Georgia. He is listed as general farmer, renting a farm [5].

In 1920, George was living in Dow, Pittsburg, Oklahoma together with his wife Elizabeth, children Jasper C (45), Molli (43), Joseph (37), Janie H (30), Gracie (29), Jewel (21), Carl (24), Larry G (26), grandchildren Roy (13), Fred (11), Luther (8), Nellie (8), Rena (5). All children were born in Georgia, all grandchildren in Oklahoma. He owned his own home, was 68 years old, and could read and write. His parents birth locations are first written down as unknown, later to be changed to the United States. His occupation is listed as farmer, on his own account (not on wage) [6].

In 1930, George was living in Haileyville, Pittsburg, Oklahoma together with his son-in-law Cyril M Surry, daughter Jewel and grandson Max. It shows him as being born in Georgia in 1851, with his parents born in Georgia and Tennessee. This information does not match with the other censuses taken up to this point, indicating that the informant for this census would likely not have known the real birth place of George [7].

Death

He died on February 27, 1932, in Dow, Oklahoma because of Cardio Nephritis[8]. His death certificate tells us he was born on January 1st, 1885, and died at the age of 81 years, 1 month and 26 days. This would give a birth date of January 1st, 1851. It is very likely that neither of those dates are right, as other information, such as the name of his parents, is not known either. He was buried in McAlester, Oklahoma [4].

Below this, the biography is unsourced.

He married Susan Elizabeth Satterwhite on October 26, 1871, in Rising Fawn, Georgia. At some point between 1880 and 1900, he migrated to Oklahoma.

Research Notes

  1. Per Ronnie Theroux, George's parents died around the Civil War and he was sent to live with relatives. (Possibly Hartlines?) -Katie Goodwin (Collins-17962) 06:43, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
  2. In the 1930 census and his death certificate, George is listed as born in Georgia. It's possible he was born near the state line, it's difficult to tell where the border is from personal experience. -Katie Goodwin (Collins-17962) 06:43, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
  3. I cannot find a record to source his middle name as Elihue, therefore I'm marking as uncertain. -Katie Goodwin (Collins-17962) 06:43, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
  4. I think list of children is correct. -Katie Goodwin (Collins-17962) 06:43, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
  5. Changed the middle name to E., which is certain, might be Elihue. Source needed. Vermeulen-1074 06:49, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
  6. 1st of January on death certificate could very well be a "well I don't know", especially since age at 1870 and 1880 censuses are off, and no exact date is mentioned at the gravestone Vermeulen-1074 06:53, 31 July 2019 (UTC)
