Fought for the Jacobites in 1715, 1719, and 1745. Fought at Glenshiel, Prestonpans, and Culloden. Lt. Gen. in Bonnie Prince Charlie's army. He escaped to Holland and was attainted.
He married, 3 Jun 1728, Amelia, daughter of Dr. James Murray of Glencarse and Strowan. She died 29 Mar 1766, leaving three sons: John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl; Maj.Gen. James Murray of Strowan; and Vice-Admiral George Murray of Pitcaithly.
He passed away in 1760 in Medemblik, Holland and was buried in the Bonifatiuschurch cemetery in Medemblik, Holland.
